I was asked yesterday how I'd feel about Clarinetgirl skipping Grade 2 and going straight on to Grade 3 as her teacher said he doesn't "want to hold her back and she might just be ready for grade 3 at the end of July"

My answer: I'm totally in favour of not methodically doing every grade, that I've seen his results over the years and totally trust his judgement.

Clarinetgirl came home with Grade 3 book tonight! So probably and exam free May and possibility of Grade 3 at the end of the summer term (if she's ready). - One proud Mummy!

Great news. I agree - exams can end up taking some of the pleasure out of learning. Love those exam free terms - so much more practice seems to get done! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif)
Wracking brain for memories of our last exam free term ...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Way - hay! Good going, clarinetgirl! Son No.2 also skipped Gr 2 on clari, and has just taken his Gr 3. One thing to watch out for is that the scales, sight-reading and aurals are also ready: Son No.2 found the jump from Gr 1 to Gr 3 on sight-reading in particular a bit of a stretch.

(As an aside, his teacher has now asked us to get Gr 4 book, despite the fact he only took Gr 3 last week and we haven't even got the results back (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) - seems a bit over-hasty to me.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) What happened to a bit of consolidation?)

In my limited experience teaching clarinet I've found that grade 1 to 2 is quite a gap with grade 3 more like a consolidation with relatively few new technical demands.

Thanks all. I'll keep you informed with how things progress. Was aware of the extra work regarding scales. Said as much to daughter. Teacher will deal with the aural. She's pretty good at sightreading.Sightread finzi carol last night from G3 book having heard it previously though. Really good going. Any advice on how to practice sight reading at the right level at home?

Best way to learn to sight read is to join an ensemble, buy repertoire and let her explore it for herself (I'm sure you will be doing this).

Been a while since I popped in here but ......

I'm the proud Mum of a very successful Grade 3 clarinettist!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yay.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/party2.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/woot.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hurrah.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/party2.gif)

Clarinetgirl Scored 125 ( which is 2 more than her grade 1 which I felt she was much more prepared for!)

Pieces: 25, 24 and 27 (out of 30), Scales 17 (out of 21) Sight reading 17 (out of 21) and Aurals 15 (out of 18)

End result a Fantastic "PASS WITH MERIT"

So proud of her! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Thankyou. Was a bit worried about how she'd done as she'd only been preparing for a short time after deciding to skip Grade 2. She'd had a huge mental block on the scales when what had been pretty solid all fell apart a week before the exam and had to be put back together again quite hastily ...

She developed a few nervous squeaks which rose their ugly heads on the day. Would have been more than happy with a pass so this is Fab! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
