As soon as I saw the result online I sent an email to the Board to ask if it is possible to get his paper so I could see where and how he had gone so disastrously wrong (he'd been scoring at a very comfortable pass/merit level on all of last year's papers, and I'm a hard marker so expected him to do at least equally well). They were great - within an hour someone rang me to explain my options. I need to wait until the mark sheet arrives and if that doesn't shed much light onto the reasons for failure I can go through the appeals system to get a more detailed breakdown of how he did. This will have to be paid for, it'll cost half the exam fee so I'll wait and see what the mark sheet reveals.

I agree that it gives us the opportunity to explore more Grade 6 repertoire, but we've been doing that for the last 2 years since he did Grade 5 and had explored more than just three exam pieces. I think I'll spend the time getting scales, aural etc up to scratch as well as some new Grade 6 material. He's certainly not yet ready to tackle any Grade 7 stuff. Sent him home last night with strict instructions to discuss with his parents what he wants to do now - they are both music teachers so well aware of the options available.

My students' theory exam results were flagged up by email yesterday morning, but the certificates and mark sheets have not arrived yet. (One distinction at Grade 1, and two healthy passes at Grade 3). Certificates always seem to arrive in the weeks that school holidays begin, so I usually end up delivering them. That can be a nice opportunity to chat with parents I rarely see, but can be very painful if a student has been unsuccessful.

I went into school to Wed and told my little Grade 1 candidate she got 94% and her first comment was 'Where did i lose marks?', not "Yes!".... everyone else was telling her well done.... gosh she's hard on herself.... I think she's 8!

Then she came to the theory class (I teach theory in that school in a group of about 8) and again she asked if I got the paper back (no, sorry) and how can she find out how she lost her marks!!!!!! Bless.... she is such a teachable girl- a sponge!
