In higher positions do you always, or have to, press the string right down to the fingerboard?


Can you 'stop' the string without touching the fingerboard?


At the bridge-end of my fingerboard my strings seem very high and I might need my bridge taken down a bit (by a luthier of course - I'm not going to try it myself!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) )

Yes, you should always be pressing it right down.

How high the string is positioned is something of a matter of preference. Good luthiers will set up a bridge erring on the high side, because lowering it is a quick job, whereas if somebody wants it higher then a new bridge is required.

I had the action adjusted on my cello recently and it was a mixture of finger board adjustment, bridge and nut.

Thanks folks - time to get in touch with the Luthier. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

My teacher says I'll need to have it lowered for when I start "grade 6 scales" which are away up there! The strings are far too high to press right down.
