he'd placed a kitchen timer on the piano to count down the lesson time (one of the parents was present at the start, and didn't ask him what that was for - so I told him to get rid of it).

I have one like this in school. Told me one day that it was 1 o'clock and the end of the lesson. She'd been studying the clock at regular intervals. I offered a suitable riposte. The next week, by chance I was in school early. I found the opportunity to alter the clock by 20 minutes or so. Oh good one Susie! Next week, why not take the battery out!

Ah no! That makes it obvious that the clock has stopped. The deviousness is in the fact that the clock is still going! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I always have the clock where I can see it, but the pupil has to turn their head very obviously to look, so it is immediately apparent if they are 'clock-watching'.

What a relief! I've rung the mum and she agrees that stopping lessons for now would be a good idea! We discussed many positive musical directions which the boy could follow in future, I'm continuing to teach the older brother, everyone is happy and the garden is rosy ...thanks heavens for that! Thanks for all your suggestions folks!
