I just wondered when you were able to get merits in ABRSM Theory Exams and what the minimum mark is? I did my Grade 1 and 5 theory exams over 10 years ago and I think I got 88 in both - which I thought at the time was a pass? Makes me feel a bit better to know that's now a merit score though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I think it's 66-79 pass

80-89 Merit

90+ distinction.

It should say on the certificate which it was, eg 'passed with merit' or 'acheived a pass'

Theory exams used to be pass and distinction only. Merit for theory exams is relatively recent (I think the stats page says exactly when)

I got 88 for G5 theory too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Found it - merit was introduced for theory in 2002 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I got 91 in grade 5 theory many years ago - but was never told that was a distinction. Not by my teacher. Not even my certificate. It just says the mark. I only found out about ten years ago that it was a distinction. Well chuffed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Thanks for the help everyone (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I think I did my Grade 5 late 2001 so just missed out on the different markings! I always felt as though there should be a merit score haha! Glad I wasn't going doolally! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/woot.gif)

Damn - I just miss out! I got 87! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

(which I was exceedingly happy with as I hate theory!)

I got 88 too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Way back in 1985 - and it was out of 99 then, not 100 and the syllabus was a bit different. The only thing I remember really is spending hours practising writing out **!?* ornaments in full! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif)

I also got 85 for my Grade 5 Theory in Period C 2001, very pleased at the time but rather miffed when I found out they introduced merits in 2002!

A past pupil of mine got 89 - the term before the merit band was introduced. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Oh well, I got 93 way back in 1980ish. No distinctions then - we considered it a fail to get less than 90 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) but of course it wasn't really. But I think the paper was much more straight forward then.
