Not having had children myself I sometimes find it difficult to judge which materials suit which age groups. I'm not sure if I've just had a batch of incredibly mature children over the years, but I tend to find that the children I've taught respond better to an attitude and materials that would normally be for children much older.

For example, I bought Irina Gorin's method, Tales of a Musical Journey, to use with a 4 year old. She wasn't interested in the stories at all! She just wanted to play the piano and learn the pieces without all the fluff to go with it. I've found the same when using books such as My First Piano Adventure with 5 and 6 year olds...they just find the characters too childish!

Anyway...my point is, I don't seem to be a good judge of this!

I bought a couple of the ABRSM's First Discovery books (Moazart and Beethoven) and I was planning on lending one to a 7 (almost 8) year old boy to give him some motivation and expand his musical knowledge away from the piano. But looking through them, I'm wondering if they'll be too childish.

Has anyone used these books with students before?

What age group would you recommend them for?

Many thanks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I've looked at them but haven't bought yet. Am thinking of biting one for my son's 6th birthday. Can I ask about the cd? Is there plenty of music on them because the description looks like it's mainly narrative. How many actual pieces are there?
