Hi!
Can anyone suggest a good way of recording acoustic violin? I am playing duets with my friend and we wish to record them. I have Alesis io2 but I find it a bit diffuclt to use the cubase, still i have to buy a microphone to record the acoustic. Can someone suggest something else? I wish to have a nice and clean sound. Tks |

I use an Olympus LS-20M. It does video as well as audio, so it's a little pricey (?180 - ?250). I find it to be very good. I've used it to record me on violin, violin/piano duets and small piano/strings ensembles.

An advantage of getting mics for the IO2 is that you can have one mic directed at each violin, allowing you to tweak the balance of the recording somewhat.
If getting your head around the software is a problem, then Audacity is a more straightforward editor for simple stuff such as this. |

I bought a Tascam DR07 digital recorder, as it was one of the cheaper ones in this market. It's easy and portable to use, you can set the mics in AB or XY (for the non-geek this means you can point them together for a narrow field to try to pick up both instruments as a combined sound, or you can point them out the way to pick up one instrument on each of the 2 stereo channels). You can easily manipulate the recordings using editing software like Cubase or Audacity, but really if you want to use any of the complex editing programs I recommend getting or borrowing the "For Dummies" that go with them or following an online course. Just trying to read the instructions doesn't really work.
If you want to buy a microphone then you are probably still looking in the ?100 bracket, something like a Blue Yeti would do justice to your playing, otherwise you are left always wondering if it sounded that bad or the recording killed it. |

Tks I would recommend the Zoom, it's versatile and easy to operate with good sound. I think mine's an H2 and easily available. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
