I was wondering how all of you practise your "Alberti bass". I'm having real trouble with some in my left hand (in Mozart's K570 sonata, first movement). It changes quickly in groups of semiquavers .. I practice it slowly and it's fine; hands together slowly and it's fine, but when i try and play it up to speed, it doesn't seem to want to work!!
Any tips? |

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you tried increasing the speed gradually? If that doesn't work, try playing the bass in dotted rhythms - it usually helps bring up problems at lower speeds where they're easier to deal with.

Do you know where you are going when the chord changes?
Playing each group as a single chord can help you get to know the hand shapes. |

QUOTE(malrase @ Jun 21 2005, 06:51 PM) I was wondering how all of you practise your "Alberti bass". I'm having real trouble with some in my left hand (in Mozart's K570 sonata, first movement). Any tips? These are horrible things to play. The secret is to keep your hand and wrist (yes, and the rest of your body, but hand and wrist are most significant here) relaxed. Rotate your wrist ever so slightly in the direction of whatever finger is playing. Keep your thumb light so that the 1st and 3rd notes become 'melody' notes. Steve |

Group the Alberti bass in 5'vs, 6's, 7's etc.
eg. CGEGC GEGCG EGCGE CGEGCG EGCGEG etc. Start slowly and build up. (as usual!) Also play them in the rhythms in the beginning of Hanon's Exercises if you have them. Practising with different rythms, dynamic levels, touch (staccatto & legato) help develop familiarity and eveness of tone. Hope this helps! |

I'm using the Alberti Bass just now, I'm playing a piece, and it's annoying to play both hands because of that **curses** bass.

It's not something I ever had a problem with.... <_< .
One of the things I just sort of do. |
