Well, I've only been learning for 18m or so but so far I have to say that Shostakovich beats all the others, IMHO of course!

There's so much emotion in the music I feel drained afterwards. No-one else does that, to me anyway.

Grade 5 in 18 minutes? Blimey! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I tend to agree regarding Shostakovich - he can deliver the knock out blow. Certainly beats several of the listed composers, but that's polls for you.

Just a thought...how many people here would rate people like Lennon and McCartney, Stevie Wonder, the various members of 10cc, Rod Temperton etc. as composers?... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

I voted for Johann Sebastian Bach. As long as I can think he is my favourite composer. His variability in pieces is amazing for me (listen to BWV 540 and Air on a g-string).

Well I would certainly consider Beatles and especially 10cc songs to be composed rather than thrown together.

I would add certain prog rock giants (deeply unfashionable I know) - Yes, early Genesis and Floyd and the magnificent, brilliant, unsurpassed Frank Zappa (well I quite like him).

How many will be included in a poll like this in 200-300 years time is questionable (or is it?).

If you mean by "a poll like this" one with only 10 composers, of whom none made their reputation solely with song, and only Paganini with small scale works, none.

No idea why Joplin is there. Missing countless other feasible options...
