I've always felt that an excellent drummer makes such a difference.
e.g.:
Radiohead - would be so much better if Phil Selway wasn't so, well, wooden...
Foo Fighters - Dave Grohl ranks among the best drummers purely because he puts everything of himself into every hit. Taylor Hawkins is maybe technically better (and still hits the drums hard) but just doesn't have that X-factor.
I've always thought that Green Day would be pants if they weren't lucky enough to have their fantastic drummer...
Another great drummer in a 'non-drummer-y' band: the guy from the Cranberries. Absolutely mint.
I play the piano, but I'd really like to play the drums. It is quite possibly the best instrument of all.
