It's TAX RETURN TIME again folks.

ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif

Tax Return time is 2/4 time

i.e. time
2 make out a nice fat cheque
4 the happy gloating tax man

ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif

after having slaved for hours, days, all of January over a hot, steaming Tax Return Form.

I'm not a happy bunny ph34r.gif

Ambs (rob me blind why don't you)

I spent most of the morning with the accountant. He told me what I can claim for, I sent him away with a couple of sheets of paper and a promise to learn Excel, and he's going to do my return for me. biggrin.gif

I then have to do the last few years again, correctly this time, and he's hopefully going to get some nice fat refund for me. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I now know which figures I need (not very many), exactly what to include in each total, and I'm feeling very, very happy. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Now that's a result! biggrin.gif

Oh, the bliss of having gone salaried and with it PAYE...... biggrin.gif

I'm one of those cases whose accountant would have been glad NOT to have had as a client.... ph34r.gif

I think the chief benefit of PAYE is the surreptitious deduction of tax each month, rather than having to actually add it up then hand over a large cheque. I dare say local councils would get away with their obnoxiously large council tax increases if they replaced it with a system of local income tax deducted through the PAYE system, rather than sending out a bill 10% higher than last years....
Frederic Chopin
Thank goodness for PAYE - but I still fill in a tax return every year (even though they have written to say that I don't have to) because of allowances for professional subscriptions etc. and they end up sending me a cheque instead! biggrin.gif

Our professional subs are reimbursed by our paymasters smile.gif .
Frederic Chopin
Anacrusis, if I were ever so lucky to have my subs reimbursed...! sad.gif

My study leave expenses from the last year have still not been paid because the Trust is in deficit and they have closed a ward and laid off staff too! sad.gif

Must seem like a small miracle each month that they actually have enough money to pay you at all. laugh.gif

Good luck Amber.

I did mine just after Christmas. I'm not very good at tax returns because I always end up having to pay out rather than receiving a nice juicy refund sad.gif

precisely. And where's the motivation in that?!

All this talk of tax returns in January gets me wondering whether I've missed something.
Mine is normally complete by the end of April.
Deborah
No sbhoa, you've not missed anything, you're just more organised than any of the rest of us. My form arrived in April, I could have filed my return online up until the end of September, otherwise it's a case of return the paper form and cough up by the end of January.

Have one of these for being efficient and dealing with yours straightaway <hands sbhoa a gold star>

What is an average fee for an accountant to do a tax return for a private teacher with 20 -25 pupils, who is notoriously bad at keeping clear records? ph34r.gif
andante_in_c
I'll let you know when mine tells me how much he's charging me! He charges by the hour, so it's dependent upon how much he has to do with the stuff I give him. The more I do myself, the less time he spends and the cheaper it is. He's explained very clearly which figures go where, so I now have a very good idea of what I'm doing.

I have about 25 pupils privately plus 2 2hr weekly classes with Blackpool Music Acadamy (it'll be 3 weekly sessions from next week which actually pays me a better rate per hour than my private pupils)

I give my accountant all my records for income and expentiture, bank statements etc., etc., and he gets on with it........I wouldn't have a clue, no way!!

He charges me about £450.00
