When you start or reply a thread, it has a list of what you aren't allowed to do.
It says "no trolling"
what does that mean?
hehe great thread isn't it!!

I just started piano lessons a week ago - I'm currently working on Beethoven's Waldstein sonata and I can play all the notes - the rhythm isn't really that important anyway. I think I should ask my teacher if I can do my LRSM diploma next month......is there anyone else on the forums as talented as me?

Now Mr B that was below the belt... trolling perhaps? I only injected that particular comment as interpersonal relationships between church staff can cause a nightmare for some organists. No, it doesn't necessarily mean that.
Typically a troll is someone who comes to a forum with the clear intent of being disruptive. For example, there was a guy who came here a while ago who was constantly going on about how brilliant he was, how quickly he'd learned, and how comparitively rubbish we all consequently must be. It was clearly a wind up, and intended to disrupt the forum.
I don't think jod's comment or Mr B's on this thread quite count as trolling. While they might be engaging in a bit of mild point scoring, their intention is to contribute to this online community - that's what guides their posting. A bit of heated exchange isn't necessarily 'trolling'.

I believe it is possible from someone to troll even if they are not self-aware enough to understand that is how their behaviour is being perceived. Whether or not that is back-handed or cack-handed, I don't know.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_trollThe term comes from angling - it's meaning is similar to 'baiting'.
So how does one categorise the behaviour I described previously? Irritating?

I think it's very subjective - what may be irritating to one person may be entertaining to someone else, boring to another etc .... Take the Einaudi discussion - and no I'm not being controversial. I didn't know Einaudi before that discussion cropped up. Once people started going on about him, I looked him up to find out more about him. I also discovered that I'd just missed a concert of his at the Bridgewater Hall two or three weeks earlier - if the conversation had cropped up then, I would have gone to the concert just to see what it was all about.
So although that thread was controversial and some found it irritating, boring or whatever, it also served a useful musical purpose, at least as far as I was concerned.
As far as this thread is concerned, I agree with what meerkat has said - I think it's the intent that defines trolling, and it's never occurred to me that jod's posts might be classed as trolling
