QUOTE(meerkat @ Apr 23 2007, 11:00 AM) *

Nope, sorry Mr B, but I have to disagree. Trolling is all about intention. Here's a pretty good wiki article on the subject - look at the section entitled 'intent'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

The term comes from angling - it's meaning is similar to 'baiting'.

So how does one categorise the behaviour I described previously? Irritating? wink.gif

I think it's very subjective - what may be irritating to one person may be entertaining to someone else, boring to another etc .... Take the Einaudi discussion - and no I'm not being controversial. I didn't know Einaudi before that discussion cropped up. Once people started going on about him, I looked him up to find out more about him. I also discovered that I'd just missed a concert of his at the Bridgewater Hall two or three weeks earlier - if the conversation had cropped up then, I would have gone to the concert just to see what it was all about.

So although that thread was controversial and some found it irritating, boring or whatever, it also served a useful musical purpose, at least as far as I was concerned.

As far as this thread is concerned, I agree with what meerkat has said - I think it's the intent that defines trolling, and it's never occurred to me that jod's posts might be classed as trolling blink.gif

They were my genuine thoughts on the matter, and it was a subject close to my heart, so Meerkat, you are right, that was not trolling. I was merely expressing an earnestly held opinion.

I really do have a pupil called Anton - does that count? Is he going to be famous ?

Please don't have a go. That was not trolling that was defending a genuine arguement. If I was trolling I'd deliberately try and upset people, when defending an arguement and offense called is accidental. Now think of it the other way around. You have a strongly held opinion, and all around you are trying to shoot it down in flames, do you stick to your guns or back off? - I'm not the back-off type of person, I tend to stick to my guns. But that is not trolling.

LOL: A pupil asked me about Einaudi yesterday, I described his music as musical wallpaper. The room we were in has a William Morris Border-paper in it. I then went on and said, well I like my wallpaper, but I'm not about to frame it and put it on the wall. Her description was even better... musical chewing gum, starts out ok, then looses its flavour as it goes on too long.

Saying this is not meant to offend Einaudi fans, its just my opinion, and I'm entitled to it just as others are entitled to theirs.

This is not trolling, this is contributing to the general discussion. Now I don't want to mention Einaudi in this light again as I know it can stir up trouble. I think its fair to say I don't like his stuff, but his records sell and so do his concert tickets so other people clearly do.

Of course there are people who don't like his music, it's fair enough because everyone is different. It's when you (and others) bring it up at every opportunity to get a reaction out of me. I don't find it amusing, although I do hold up my hands and admit that you are trying really really hard to get me moderated/banned again - so well done, have a sweety.

In other words you feel that you are being trolled, i.e. someone is posting just to incite you? That is against the forum rules is it not?

Nat you make a wonderful vibrant contribution to this community, you are a breath of fresh air. If we have a different opinion I feel I can thrash it out and learn. Now things got personal on the composer thread...if its any consolation I didn't exactly feel very comfortable with it either.

But I like sweeties (the kids normally eat them all at home!)

And not before time too.

Without trying to upset the moderators, they know that what originally happened upset more than Nat. Personally I'm glad to see her back. She's a music student and from what I hear a pretty fine musician. Now if that's not the person who should be able to contribute her who is?
