Nope, sorry Mr B, but I have to disagree. Trolling is all about intention. Here's a pretty good wiki article on the subject - look at the section entitled 'intent'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll
The term comes from angling - it's meaning is similar to 'baiting'.
So how does one categorise the behaviour I described previously? Irritating?
I think it's very subjective - what may be irritating to one person may be entertaining to someone else, boring to another etc .... Take the Einaudi discussion - and no I'm not being controversial. I didn't know Einaudi before that discussion cropped up. Once people started going on about him, I looked him up to find out more about him. I also discovered that I'd just missed a concert of his at the Bridgewater Hall two or three weeks earlier - if the conversation had cropped up then, I would have gone to the concert just to see what it was all about.
So although that thread was controversial and some found it irritating, boring or whatever, it also served a useful musical purpose, at least as far as I was concerned.
As far as this thread is concerned, I agree with what meerkat has said - I think it's the intent that defines trolling, and it's never occurred to me that jod's posts might be classed as trolling
They were my genuine thoughts on the matter, and it was a subject close to my heart, so Meerkat, you are right, that was not trolling. I was merely expressing an earnestly held opinion.
