I was watching Evelyn Glennie's marvellous lecture (www.myspace.com/officialevelynglennie - "In this soaring demonstration, Evelyn leads the audience...") in which she talks about hearing other than with the ears.

At the same time, I was wondering why I didn't want to watch the excellent Proms concerts on the telly. And I wondered if one of the special things about hearing a live concert (other than the obvious ones - seeing, acoustics, sense of occasion, sharing with other audience members, etc) was the picking up of non-aural sensations.

And I wondered if anyone had any views on this?

If there's a Prom on TV that I couldn't otherwise get to (for whatever reason), I'll watch it. I'm not someone who gets hung up on on having to 'be there' in order to enjoy a performance.

No, you don't get any of the general sensations you list when watching the TV, but at the same time, I don't think that it detracts from the overall performance either.

Even if I wasn't a violinist, then I'd still be happy to watch concerts on TV. Apart from anything else, I think the ticket prices for classical concerts in the the UK are horrendous. They do nothing to dispel the myth that it is only for toffee-nosed, elitest retirees, which is a real shame, because the majority of orchestral players themselves are very down-to-earth people.
