The scene in The Railway Children where the smoke clears on the platform and she shouts "Daddy! It's my Daddy!" brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it (including whilst driving to work this morning!)

Yeah, I get upset when characters die...

Other films that make me cry: Schindler's List, Dead Poets' Society, Titanic, Shadowlands, The Joy Luck Club...oh, and the end of Remains of the Day (why doesn't the butler just tell her he loves her?!)

Ooh, and not a film, but the episode of ER where Dr Greene dies is awful. I got through sooo many tissues both times I watched that.

I love films/books that make me cry.

I cried buckets in Gone with the Wind when the little girl (Bonnie) breaks her neck falling off her horse when I first saw the movie. I don't cry at it now.

Two that always make me cry however many times I watch are the end of When Harry met Sally when they finally get together on New Tear's Eve and the end of Four Weddings and a Funeral when they are standing in the rain and he asks her to agree NOT to marry him for the rest of her life.

Brooks Hatlen's death in Shawshank Redemption. We watched it in class and every single person was in tears, even the guys. It's soooo sad, I cry buckets when watching it.

The end of The Immortal Beloved when she is reading the letter and they play the second movement of the Emperor...gets me every time. (I know it's not fact..but what a great use of the music. And Gary Oldman makes a great Beethoven ). Oh yes...in the same film, Karl goes off to attempt suicide and they play the 7th Symphony (second movement).

In Disneys Fantasia..the Greek mythology figures for the Pastoral Symphony and the cloaked figures going off to pray in the Ave Maria...very clever, moving stuff

I can remember my youngest crying her eyes out over ET. She was only about 5 at the time.

ET is pretty sad. *sniff*

The end of Of Mice and Men is really sad, makes me cry everytime... then again a lot of films do.

We watched it in English and half the class were in tears, it was terrible!! But it's a really good film.

The original black and white film about the Titanic - A Night to Remember - particularly the scene with the band playing and also the one when the man puts his wife and children into the boat and I think they say they'll see each other in New York but they both know he's going to go down with the ship. I can't bear to write this, I'm in tears thinking about it!

Another black-and-white film - It's A Wonderful Life - with James Stewart. The scene when he wishes he'd never been born, the scene when he clutches his little girl's flower petals, the scene when he comes home and all the town has rallied round, and then when the bell rings and the angel's got his wings...

I'm going to have to get out of this thread, I can't bear it...

I'd try and think of another film scene that makes me cry just to get back on topic, but I don't want to set off again!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned The Green Mile yet! That just kills me.

The near end of Meet Joe Black, when Anthony Hopkins walks off with Brad Pitt.

Juliette Stephensons grief near the beginning of Truly Madly Deeply, and towards the end when Alan Rickman has to let her go .....

But for both films, i think it was the music that encouraged the tears, i love Thomas Newmans' film scores and of course the Bach pieces they used in Truly Madly Deeply

AND last night I was close to tears watching 'Les Patterson Saves the World' because it was easily the most awful film I've every seen - even the camera work was awful, it's not even entertaining as a mickey-take of itself, and I'm now going to stick the DVD on ebay as the worst film ever.... even if you are a Dame Edna fan it's boring, banal, tedious.. I even wish it was funny-bad but it's not, it's just bad-bad...

I agree with all of the afore mentoined films, particularlly ET I have never watched the whole film, I watched it when I was 5/6 and got hysterical when they took him to the lab for testing, i ran and cried under my bed, mum desperatley tried to get me to watch the end, but I was too upset, i have never been able to bring myself to watch it since (even though I know there is a happy ending). 'Meteor' (I know! ) - the scene where the character played by Annette Bening knowingly faces death (on a beach with her dad), but in the knowledge that she saved a young child and her mother by giving up her seat on a plane that was headed for safety.

I haven't watched 'The Railway Children' for a while, not since having kids anyhow..... *makes point to find copy and buy a large box of tissues*

I bet you have! Everyone has, think of when you were a baby or toddler. Anyway, according to all the psychology/self-help books etc, we're supposed to be "in touch with our emotions..."

My best friend (male) watched Rent! the other day while I was there and had to leave halfway through for a tissue, cause he was crying. Of course afterwards he insisted he had a cold, and wasn't crying... he was just "sad in a really tough way."

Yes, Bambi! And that scene in "The Crying Game" when one of the protagonists reveals their true self.. You know what I mean!!

Plus I remember going to see "Seven" many years ago and, visiting the loo afterwards at the cinema, us gents were gobsmacked into absolute silence....


I agree. The music and lyrics were absolutely crass. Enough to bring anyone to tears!

I absolutely sob my socks off in the film Gladiator, it's when he dies, and you just see his hand brushing the corn in the field as he's reunited with his wife and little boy, absolutely kills me!!! It's the music more than anything, it almost sets me off when they play it on classic fm tv!

And to add... in Harry Potter 4 when Cedric dies and his father comes down and it's just so emotional I sat there in the cinema crying to myself (someone please tell me it's not just me!)

That bit of Titanic actually makes me laugh now... after my friend pointed out how she says she'll never let him go then actually pushes his body away. Yes I know it's all metaphorical and everything, but I still find it funny...

I always laughed at that in Titanic. Yes Harry Potter four was sad... would have been less sad if the actor was a little less good looking.

HP4 was very sad. The actor was quite good looking but the actor playing his father was just so amazing, he's what made it so emotional

Anything where animals die - wildlife documentaries especially usually mean a trip to the supermarket to get a new box of tissues afterwards..........
