Seriously, why would anyone take AS Physics? dry.gif

I got 3% for a third year seniors (year 9 in new speak) internal physics exam. I think that was because I wrote my name very neatly at the top of the paper laugh.gif I'm generally hopeless at science... blush.gif

.......err, because Physics is brilliant and fascinating. Who wouldn't want to know the secrets of the universe?

You must have had the wrong teacher Barry.

I had three physics teachers : none were able to make me any better at the subject. Couldn't understand much of it at all, eventually lost interest and wanted shot of it and all the other sciences as soon as possible...

Oh dear. Similarly my 3rd year music teacher was so creepy I gave up my best and favourite subject. Now I'm making up for lost time.

I did Maths and Physics up to Level 3 (A Level) level ... I just managed to get through it before starting an enginering degree (Motorsport). OK, OK I did it for the cars ....

.... 1 term in I admitted defeat, started my business and went back to playing the clarinet and piano laugh.gif

In that time I found:
1. I'm not a scientist, I hated it at school and to force yourself to do something is silly.
2. I love music and want to progress with that. smile.gif

Sometimes people are late bloomers - I did very badly in my first computer science courses, but many years on now I do it for a living...

But it's true, sometimes people just aren't good or interested in a particular subject and no amount of teaching is going to change that. That would be me and all of biology, history, and literature.

Until about forty years ago, Staines was home to one of the world's largest linoleum factories. (Does anyone else remember lino?)

In case anyone is interested, Lino was made with Linolenic and Linoleic acids, both of which are carboxylic 'fatty acids' produced from vegetable oils, and principally Linseed Oil. The word "Linoleic" is derived from the Greek "Linon" (flax), from which the Linseed comes. Oleic means 'oil' or 'olive'.

Similar raw materials are used in the manufacture of conventional (alkyd) paints and varnishes.

Anyhow, I digress. We used to live near to Guildford in Surrey, which was about 18 miles to the south east of Staines. Just occasionally, when the wind was in the wrong direction, there was an incredibly strong and pungent smell from the Lino factory, so I cannot imagine what is was like for those living there. sad.gif

oooooooooooo I'm now an advanced member :roll eyes:

anybody know why Ben Nevis is higher than Snowdon? A1 poster on topic due in 13 dec, still trying to work out where to start and WHY it is.. wacko.gif

errm, I'm not a geologist, but aren't they both extinct volcanoes/calderas? Different types of lava able to support different heights and the density of substrata and weight it is able to support?

GT: Have you looked at the geomorphological processes which have operated in the two areas? I'm not sure, but it might be worth looking at these and at the quaternary and glacial processes in addition to the underlying geological structures. smile.gif

I am sure the answer to this will be found in Arthur Moores 'Principals of Physical Geology'. Ive been away for a couple of days , but back this evening and I'll look it up. I did study Geology for 2 of the 3 years doing Chemistry in the 60's, but have forgotten most of it. But Arthur Moores book is useful as a reference, and I often still refer to it.
