People are understandably elliptical about their location on what is after all a publically accessible forum that will show up entries on a search using any search engine.

Many generalise, like I do, others omit the informaiton entirely.

I work in IT: the one thing you learn very, very early on is to never make assumptions.

Technically I come under the West Midlands, but I live so far north in the region that I regard myself as North West (since places such as Manchester, Liverpool, even Bolton, are significantly nearer to me than Birmingham).

At some point I will offer to organise an event, it's the kind of thing I'd enjoy doing. However, the big challenge is finding a venue and I'd want to sort that out before going public. I'd probably be looking at Chester, south/mid Cheshire. When I have some ideas, I'll let you know and I promise to provide a good few months notice (i.e. 4 - 6).

But in Lee King speak (without of course revealing your location), you're not a local... rolleyes.gif

The West Midlands region, sometimes called the Heart of Britain includes Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire the Black Country and the Second City.

I am East Midlands, but still Midlands!

Aaaaa-haaaaaa!

I actually know of at least two more Forum users in the East Midlands. Pixie*Porsche has shown an interest in organising events up there before.

I'm East Midlands...

Yes, all you lot get Granada up there, don't you?

But it's definately in one of the counties I've named, so you're West Midlands. To be North West, you'd have to be north of Grindley Brook by the petrol station - where Cheshire starts.

We've done Chester twice, with two different organisational teams, but both at the same venue. I was heavily involved with Chester 2, in 2009 : I'll dig out the info in a bit smile.gif

Actually, no I don't and I can't remember the last time I watched ITV anyway.

In terms of boundaries, I am several miles from Cheshire and a few from Wales. Technically I come under the West Midlands in terms of the county I live in. In terms of where I would go to do things, Birmingham is significantly harder to get to than either Liverpool or Manchester. Liverpool is just on an hour and Manchester is about an hour and 15 as I found out last weekend, and Birmingham is around the 70 miles mark and requries navigating a frequently congested chunk of the M6.

Well, it never takes me long to get up to Wrexham from here via the A41 from M54j3. Or indeed to Shrewsbury as it's dual carriageway all the way and then a very fast bit of A5 to Oswestry (and I drive within the speed limits)

The Chester 2009 was my first event, and excellent it was too, also with a fine Steinway piano at that location (St. Marys Centre, Chester), but anywhere in Cheshire would be good for me.

The wheels are teenie tiny compared to a modern car, lol. They are 14", the tyres have wide sidewalls, however. Tyres are original 70's style spec smile.gif

I wish I owned a Steinway ... LOL! Actually, I'd take a Bosendorfer Imperial, if we're being ostentatious biggrin.gif

My old cars cost a lot less to buy than your average new car and a lot less to insure and maintain, as well, so I actually estimate keeping my 4 on the road is more like keeping 2 modern cars.

I was a fairy in the Brownies and I didn't like that at all. Anyway it didn't matter much because my Brownie career was short lived. My mother was asked to remove me from the Brownies for bad behaviour. I still don't know what exactly I had done - but it must have been very naughty!

I can boast in my younger days being the proud owner of a Reliant Robin! It was dusky yellow, like Del Boy's one! I came out of work one day in Plymouth and found some vandals had trashed it and turned it onto its side. The police told me that it was Royal Marine cadets who did it (for a laugh) whilst they were out jogging.

Last time I had mouth ulcers I tried something called Oralmedic - it's a one-off treatment, so once you've used it the ulcer won't hurt any more. It seems to work by cauterising the ulcer. It was briefly agonising when I applied it, but it worked really well.

Sitting here at work, dialled in to a teleconference but without the leader there (yet). Plinky-plonky piano music to entertain me while I wait. Suddenly I noticed I was not just tapping my foot but kind of swaying side-to-side with the pulse.
I thought, my colleagues may think I am mad, but I bet Cyrilla would award me a sticker biggrin.gif

Am completely pooped. But also happy. biggrin.gif

Loooong day today: full day at work (though distracted by anxiety over musical commitments later in the day: took long lunch break to practise), followed by long drive to oboe lesson, followed by solfeo lesson, followed by band rehearsal, followed by delivering oboe lesson (my first! smile.gif ). Late pub supper with pals and then long drive home. I was supposed to fit in an hour and a half of exercise somewhere along the way but something had to give...

Now for some sleep.gif

I noticed the Head of IT Services had logged 3 tickets into the call logging system between about 22:45 and 23:30 last night.

What is he working at that hour for?

Reading today's crop of advice has reminded me of how glad I am to be a member of this forum. When I become a teacher, the quality of my teaching will be greatly improved by the advice that I have read on here over the years. My thanks to everyone.

Not sure I am overly keen on my line manager calling my mate and dude all the time. I have a name you know!

The worst thing is people calling me by my surname. I know it may seem like it should be my forename but it is not and my email signature clearly states my correct name.

Maybe s/he was working from home. My husband's a sysadmin for a university and he's often able to deal with other people's problems from his home connection to the network. I'm not sure if their computer services department runs 24/7, but certainly some students prefer to work at night, so it's not unreasonable to think that somebody might be "on call"

Sometimes people get confused....

When I started work, we were only referred to by our surname - not even prefixed with a "Mr." as in "Ah, Jones could you get me the...." blink.gif Different world and it's not that long ago!

biggrin.gif Brings back memories of Blackadder Goes Forth, and the Stephen Fry colonel addressing Captain Darling by his surname. Must have happened, and also to members of the Love family. Imagine it in school: "Sit down, darling. Come here, love"
