I've just found out that a week on sunday i have an audition for the national youth orchestra of Wales
yaaaay biggrin.gif
however
i need 2 contrasting grade 8 standard pieces, unaccompanied
for a fast/technical one i may play Telemann Fantasia no.12, which i played for my grade 8 and got quite high marks for.
But the other one needs to be from the 20th century repertoire. What pieces would this be? :S For my list B grade 8 piece i played Pan et Les Berges from La Flute de Pan, which i dunno if that is 20th century or what but im certainly not going to be playing that one (i've way overplayed that to the point where it was known as my signature piece!! and im no longer that confident on it either).
I have no idea what to play for that
I also need to play something on piccolo
i have no piccolo music so which pieces would be suitable to be played on piccolo? any suggestions? :s
i feel so unprepared, i assumed i hadn't got an audition as i knew the auditions were in october yet i hadn't heard anything.
so as you can see, i'm now in quite a panic. i really wanna be well prepared for this when it gets round to it biggrin.gif
*gets learning my scales inside out*

I have a pupil who successfully played a Kohler study on the piccolo for a similar audition. Something that shows off the range is important. There are lots of studies that could be played if yoy have nothing piccolo-specific prepared.

Other flute possibilities - Syrinx/ Danse de la Chevre??
superflute
For my grade 8 study I'm playing The Pied Piper by Gordan Lamb. This would hit two birds with one stone as it is a 20th century piece with the first movement on flute and the second on piccolo. Plus it's not really that trick, provided you better at piccolo than I am lol!

i'm currently playing a Boehm composition...from the book 76 Graded Studies for Flute, book two. it's number 75. a couple of my friends scored really high just the pervious exam season. challenges your technicality.

How did your audition go, Fliwt? What did you play in the end. My daughter has an audition for the SCYWO on Friday and badly wants to get in. So any hints or tips would be great.

Hey!
The audition went very well thanks.
Though they gave me some VERY nasty sight reading and C major scale 3 octaves slurred!
As for tips i'd say definately master the c major 3 octaves slurred (assuming your daughter is a flautist?), i can usually do it ok-ish but my mouth had dried up and everything it came out horribly. Think that sort of blew my chances of getting in - i made myself sound like i really can't play high notes.
Also i got a tip from one of the panel
He gave me a very difficult sight reading piece and he was like so, i want it at this tempo *sings the first few bars in this fast tempo* so i was like ok *thinking 'oh my gosh'* so i tried it and well there were many wrong notes and 2nd attempts at passages...
and he then said he'd give me a tip, which was to never play sight reading fast in auditions, even if they ask you to play it fast like he asked me to, play it slowly then if they ask for it faster, you've already had a go at it wink.gif

I'll let you know if i got in or not but i highly doubt i did - there's so many better flautists than me for them to choose from and my sight reading was quite bad - even though sight reading is usually my strong point sad.gif
Pieces and scales went very well though =]

I hope your daughters audition goes well and hope she gets in biggrin.gif

Ooh and i played Telemann Fantasy no.12 and Poulenc Sonata movemnt one on flute, and some random study by Paul Harris (!) on piccolo

Glad it went well. When will they let you know, that's the next big question? blink.gif

My daughter will be playing Pan by Roussel from Joueurs de flute and Hypnosis by Clarke. I hope they are "contrasting " enough. They probably aren't and they're not meant to be unaccompanied, but her teacher wouldn't let her play Syrinx and the orchestra never performs baroque so there didn't seem much point in playing any. Oh well you can only go with what you've got. Her major scales should be alright, it's the minors that are dreaded. Good point about the sight reading. But I think you did the right thing to attempt it at the given tempo otherwise it's like you ignored instructions.

So good luck and think of us on friday evening ohmy.gif
