Full Version: String Choices

Hi all,

My teacher will be going to US in early December and he's agreed to purchase a few sets of strings for me to try because Singapore just doesn't have as many choices as US (lol) and that he told me some sets are cheaper there.

He recommended these three sets:

Pirastro - Obligato
Larsen - Tzigane
Pirastro - Evah Pirazzi

He strongly recommeneds the Obligato and also said that the Pirazzis might be too bright and harder to control.

I currently have Vision Titanium Solos for all four strings. While I love their sound, I'm quite open to experimentation (it's fun! =)) and also because I don't like the Vision Titanium Solo E. It whistles practically everytime I make a string change to E. My violin is a Chinese violin which is pretty brilliant sounding. It's a Synwin SV6001 for those who live in Singapore or have heard of Synwin violins. smile.gif

I've heard that Obligatos are similar to gut strings and are quite "soft". What does that mean? Also, what is the difference between string gauges? I currently use medium and I'm thinking of trying a soft gauge.

Any suggestions or comments would be really helpful!

Thanks! biggrin.gif

Hi rosfrog, sorry, I meant to say it sounds brilliant, not bright. Don't know what's wrong with me today. tongue.gif There's really nothing wrong with the sound of my violin. I love it but I just want to experiment. =) And get rid of the whistling E if possible. tongue.gif

If you want to get rid of the whistling E, try a Hill E, medium. They certainly don't squeak as much as a lot of other E strings.
