I really wish it were possible in the university atmosphere to sleep more than 5 hours a night without being considered/feeling "lazy", regardless of how much work one actually accomplishes...
So true, so true.
Daughter had a lightbulb moment earlier this week: realized that the reason every deadline goes to the wire is that if she ever sees herself coming in early, she thinks she can't have done enough work for whatever it is, so expands the assignment.
There is something to be said for not having a conscience
I agree. Wishing I hadn't been so... erm... ambitious in my tackling this design project. So much to do, and 6 days to do it in.

As somebody who writes quite a lot for a living, I can tell you there is nothing like an imminent deadline to focus the mind. Was it not Murphy's Law which said that any project will expand to fit available time, just as we can fill any available space when moving to a larger house? I don't think it is a case of laziness or over ambition at all.
When I have plenty of time to write an article or report I find it difficult to get motivated, as there are always one hundred and one other, more important things to do first, including tidying my desk, replying to outstanding e-mails and a dozen other things. It is only when the deadline is getting near that I can put my mind to it, and more to the point, give it my best attention.

Hmm, the trouble is, its quite easy to do lots of programing, do lots of calculations and create lots of graphs... only to realise its now going to take you about 4 days to write something about them all.
And in those 4 days, I need to do the mechanical vessel design, create some technical drawings, design a control system etcetcetc....
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhh!
Opps, this is the wrong thread for this, right? Sorry! Right, happy things... Erm, my supervisor seems fairly happy with how things are going...

After 3 weeks of being on a diet, the cat's podge is noticeably reduced. I've also started feeding her fresh stuff instead of biscuits and tinned food. ?1 worth of kidneys lasts a whole week and it doesn't cost that much more than catfood.

This was the other day but anyway....we went to a theme park and went on a ride with little boats on a flume thing. There was a sign on each boat in Italian which said "Non dondolare la barca" (Don't rock the boat) and the English (mis)translation underneath said: "Don't skip the beat".

Son Airman got back to Sendai today...and far from scenes of devastation (apart from his room, that is..), he reports that he rushed straight to the flower shop and to get some marigolds and violas to plant at his dorm before dark.
The cherry blossoms have not yet opened in Sendai, but here's hoping that spring brings flowers and blue skies to Sendai!

In a rather perverse way:
We received a fancy brochure through the letterbox this morning from a ladies hairdresser that has recently set up in Wynyard Village, called Hooker & Young. I daresay it will prove popular with the footballer's wives who live around there, but it seemed a rather unwise choice of name for a business.

Visited the library. I had such a simple plan: Enter library, return book in library lobby, turn around, exit library.
Turns out, it's impossible. Entered library, returned book, walked beyond the lobby and in to the room of books, picked up two more books
At least they aren't serious reading books, as I need to 1) get my final OU assignment done; and 2) then move on to doing something about the 100-ish books on my 'waiting to be read' shelf which seems to never get reduced! Both books I picked up were cooking books, one all about bread and one all about potatoes

Then walked back towards the office along the riverside, stopping at a bench to eat my sandwich. Where several ducks and geese glared at me for having bread in my hand that was going in to my mouth, not theirs!
