Hi martl1
Don't panic - us cellists are very adaptable!
We'll read anything you give us - except Alto!

We prefer Bass!
But the range is so vast on the instrument, that we find we end up in Tenor. Not for long before it goes too high and we're suddenly in Treble!
But I wouldn't like to see the whole piece written in Treble! wink.gif
cecilia
But usually bass unless it's particularly high

Bass & tenor clef.
Definately not treble clef.

just a quick questions.... what instruments use the tenor clef, and what instruments use the alto clef?
oboist
Yep, bass and tenor but (in terms of exams) I don't think tenor is used much before Grade 5. So, if you're writing for an inexperienced player, always use bass clef and make sure you don't write too low for the lowest string or too high on the A string to make it difficult for someone who hasn't learnt high positions yet.
DGA
Sometimes treble
piano_ellie
bass, tenor and treble (but only treble if the piece goes crazilly high !!!!!) laugh.gif

ye it can go into treble, ive got a score where the cello part goes into treble

It is certainly the case that high 'cello parts may be notated in the treble clef. An example occurs in the first movement of Bruckner's third symphony.

The viola plays in the alto clef, and the trombone sometimes playes in tenor clef.

The alto clef is used by violas and occasionally by trombones. It is also used in vocal music.

Have a look here for list of instruments and the clef's they use...

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, how dare you say the viola plays using the tenor clef? ohmy.gif The cello uses it when they have to go high but otherwise they use the bass. And the viola uses the alto clef!! Hence why it is sometimes referred to as the viola clef! smile.gif
