Hi, a possibly simple and stupid question from a wannabee grade 1 piano player, but what does 'rf' mean? It occurs 4 times in the grade 1 exam piece Arabian Air (B:2) but I don't know what it means ..... more interestingly, nor does my piano teacher!! (and she's grade 8). Any ideas gratefully received as I'm on a bet with a mate for whom can answer this one quickest. Cheers, Nila Jane

It probably means rinforzando = strengthen or reinforce the tone.

rinforzando more or less means sforzando applied to a passage of notes rather than to a single note, i.e. play each note as though it were marked "sf" or "sfz". It's sometimes unclear when the instruction ends.
