Hi I'm considering buying a practice mute and was considering the Yamaha silent brass system. Is there any recommendations or is a denis wick practice mute better and quieter.

thank you

I'm not a personal fan of the Silent Brass system, although I know that some people are. It has quite a lot of resistance, which causes back pressure on the enmbouchure. The Dennis Wick isn't great either, for the same reason (and intonation tends to go awry). The best practice mute I've come across is the Bremner Sssshhhh Mute, which is far cheaper than Silent Brass. You can get it from Packers. I use it all the time at home.

Totally agree with this. I use my practice mute a lot and so you've got to be careful about resistance levels as it can feel very different when playing without the mute. Same with whether is affects your intonation. If you get used to making certain adjustments with a practice mute, it's not going to help your "real" playing. The sssshhhh mute is very light and it's certainly not silent while you play - you can hear yourself but won't disturb anyone in a different room!
