Beginning to suspect that one of the things I need on my own 'to do' list is a trip to the opticicians after spending some time considering the following -
What sort of instruments you would have playing in your IKEA band.
The legality of loaning a P60 to a refugee.

I'm off now to weigh out microscopically small amounts of ingredients for Daughter's first foray into "Food Technology."
Since the subject isn't optional I don't really see why the school don't provide the ingredients. Not looking forward to seeing her head off to school tomorrow with 7 little pots and an oven proof dish (as well the usual huge rucksack full of books, 2 musical instruments, and a P.E. kit.)

I have fond wacko.gif ill.gif memories of "domestic science" as it was called when I was at school. I used to ride my bike to school with schoolbag, P.E. kit, violin, a case of recorders and cooking ingredients which had to be in a biscuit tin. The first time I took an egg it broke on the way to school and ended up all over everything else in my biscuit tin ill.gif so the second time my mother thought it would be safer to break it into a small tupperware container. The teacher sold me an egg when the first one broke but she went through the roof when I turned up with an egg that was usable but no longer in its shell, saying she had no proof that I was the one who had broken it and I would grow up not knowing how to crack an egg wacko.gif

Oh my goodness weren't teachers petty. Having said that, I spend most of my baking life picking shell out of the bowl. All we were allowed to do at school was beans on toast and a cup of cocoa. huh.gif

I made beans on toast and cocoa in Home Economics : and got 2/10 for it. The cocoa was fine, the beans were well cooked and the toast wasn't underdone or burnt. I lost 8 marks for not cutting the crusts off the toast blink.gif

No I'm not. This appointment has already been changed three times because the dentist's wife was expecting a baby and the due date kept changing. The dentist's receptionist has just phoned to say that the baby has arrived ahead of the planned caesarean on Wednesday, so I have had to rearrange the appointment yet again. rolleyes.gif

My fond memories of DS are my sister's fish pie, which was nice and the liver and bacon casserole which not even the dog fancied.

Hahaha, I used to HATE "Home Economics" - it was nothing that you couldn't have learnt with a couple of hours and a recipe book. Infact, you could have probably learnt more. You didn't get a choice what you made, either and you could guarantee whatever you made was dinner or dessert for that evening, too!

There were two boys who went on from school to work as cefs and took professional cookery courses, now I've no doubt they learnt lots from that but I very much doubt anyone learnt anything from making a flapjack in Home "Economics"

Recently had 'words' with some friends of mine on this subject. I suggested to Daughter that she might find someone to give her burnt offering away to rather than lug it around to a music lesson and 2 dance classes after school. Friends were horrified that I didn't want to sample this culinary miracle for myself.
"After all - she made it, and she'll feel dreadful if you don't appreciate it!" Really??
These are the same parents who complained about having to spend ?10 on a family ticket to hear their daughter sing and play in the school concert and insisted on leaving before the end (complete with child) because they had pre-booked their cab.
We obviously have very different priorities.

I don't know how I'd have felt as a child if my family wouldn't eat my cookery efforts. Of all the things I had to cook the only thing I still make is quiche. 25 years on though I can still remember the grief of having swimming, a clarinet lesson and recorder group all on the same day as cookery. The 1/2 mile from home to the station was soooooo long. If I was organised I took some things in a day early and left things in my locker until the next day...............and on 1 occaision deliberately burnt the cookery to avoid having to take it home at all!

Whilst I didn't learn much in cookery lessons we did at least cover basic knife skills and food preparation. I had to do a lot of the cooking at home which made going to university and living in self catered halls much much less daunting.
