my sis is out in Thailand but we have heard from her since the tsunami this morning. anyone else anxious to hear more news.........
nicki_flute
Yes, I hope everyone in that region that posts on the boards and their families are ok. <333

For people who don't know what happened, then go here to the BBC News Site
Rainbow
I really hope that everyone from those regions who posts on the boards is all right.

I also hope and pray for the well-being of many who are resident in these affected countries too, including our own ABRSM overseas representatives. I am also concerned for two of my students (father and son) who went to Sri Lanka (with the rest of the family) for a holiday of a lifetime over Christmas.

I guess I won't know until term starts (when they were due back) what happened to them but I am praying they are safe and well.
all ears
Any Indian/Southeast Asian members care to post a message just to reassure us!

Glad to hear that Singapore suffered no casualties...at least as far as I am aware.
Linz_12
i hope as many people as possible are ok!!
missfabflute
Hey from Malaysia!

We are safe, except for the coastal areas...but it was not so affected as of Indonesia

According to some of my friends, the KL twin towers shook O_O
that is scary. It could've fallen.

Then newspaper said that it could happen again :S

My friend lives in Thailand..said she is okay but not the people in Phuket (coastal areas again)

Two of my families also went to that part of the world for Christmas - let us hope everyone comes back safely. The scale of the disaster is almost unimaginable.

I thought for a dreadful moment that my cousin might be there as she is travelling on a 15 month trip, as she usually goes to that part of the world. But thankfully I think she is in Australia at the moment. *crosses fingers for families that are out there*
frumpybabes
my sis has now been transferred out of the island, she phoned 20 mins after the disaster ... she has now been airlifted north of the island is been cared for by the local authorities. She survived only to be one of a few on the island ... she was shock to be surrounded by so many bodies. Poor sis
Just can't wait until she is back here now.
nicki_flute
Oh that is horrible, I hope she is OK. Give her all my best wishes biggrin.gif
sutty_73
My Thoughts and prayers go out to all those people involved, I can't believe the pictures we are seeing on the tv over here....

I hope you sis is ok Frumpybabes....

It's all so horrible. I have a friend who runs a bar on the beach in Phuket of all places. His mother is also my mother's best friend and she was going completely frantic with worry all day yesterday. Finally he managed to phone to say he is OK, but totally traumatised by the loss of at least 15 of his friends as well as having lost everything.

The scale of this disaster is totally unimaginable and your heart can only go out to the people who lost relatives and other loved ones, as well as losing their whole livelihoods - it's all so unutterably horrible.

This is the first time Malaysia was affected by a natural disaster

Usually, we have totally ZILCH disasters

O_O scary.

and apprently, the tremors could be felt all the way to the UK!
nicki_flute
I don't think they got this far, but they certainly got to Africa apparently. I can imagine the fright of something affecting a country which doesn't usually have natural disasters, nothing happens (thankfully *touch wood*) in the UK, but I can't imagine a tsunami suddenly wiping out most of the coastal towns.

Do you not remember the small earthquake in Dudley, West mids last year at some point? Although it was extremely small.

I couldn't believe the scale of the tsunami. It is terrible that it spread so far.
juniorpianist
I'm a Singaporean and this earthquake thingy is all over the papers! It must be totally traumatising for countries that were hit devastatingly. I saw the news on tv this afternoon and I could not believe the extent of the damage! sad.gif Even though Singapore wasn't directly affected by the earthquake, my heart still goes out to those out there in India and especially Phuket. It must be really terrible.

I hope all goes well out there, especially the rescue efforts. I'll be praying.

My best wishes to everyone in South East Asia who has been affected by the tsunami. One of my best friends is out there at the moment with her family: I'm trying not to think about it too much.
frumpybabes
I hope everyone is has found their friends. Just to let you know my sis has now been airlifted twice and is now safely in Bangkok with some friends that also survived. She is also very lucky to have all belongings too. However she has decided to remain out there and try to help.....

Best wishes to everyone out there in the disaster zone and much thanks to everyone in Thailand that have helped my sister out and get her to safety

Thank you
tremolololo
It's about peak time for booking holidays and luckily I went to Phuket four months ago and we're not planning to go there next year.

I'm so glad your sister is safe, Frumpybabes, and you too Missfabflute. The scale of the disaster really does seem unimaginable.

Me too. I haven't heard from my friend, which I suppose is fair enough: no news is good news!

My heart goes out to everyone from South East Asia. I'm glad to hear that Missfabflute is safe and Frumpybabes sister.

Glad to see SE Asia forum members signing in. I have to admit that I can't quite appreciate the sheer scale of this disaster yet.

Those of you in the UK who can, www.redcross.co.uk is one site where you can make an online donation. Don't forget that if you're a higher rate tax payer the government chips in 28p in the pound if you tick the gift aid box - make sure that if you donate it's via a site that enables this!!
missfabflute
Thanks everyone smile.gif

(T____T) the waves were scary!

Infact, I have a video in my email if anyone wants to watch the first waves...

my mum send it to me and there were people on the beach and this man was recording the beach (so happened too)

and then people saw these waves...

the first waves were calm....the second one was strong.

the third one...omg...it like went over the whole sandy beachy area and there were people there and they couldnt escape because there was a wall barrier.

by the time the 4th wave came, it pulled them back into the ocean

*cries*

Yes, someone said on the radio, the first wave came and the fishermen went to pick up all the fish left on the beach and then they were swept out sad.gif.

It is a really dreadful disaster, the pictures we are seeing are terrible and it is awful that so many lives have been lost.

80,000, expected to reach 100,000 from a natural disaster, how awful.

I know sad.gif. But think if each Premiership football player gave over a weeks wages it would help so much, they get paid a fortune which they don't need and would be well spent in the affected areas.
elmo
I'm watching it on the tv, even though I really can't stand that sort of thing, it makes me feel sick thinking about how many people died. But it does make me feel happier knowing that the world's pulling together to do something about it, and countries (well some) are putting political matters and dfferences aside to help people.

Yes I know, but they need designer clothes and 50 cars. Well they think they do.

But you can also donate through oxfam, and at the moment I can't really think of any better place for money to go to. Some places are also collected books/toys/clothes for the children orphaned by this tragedy.

Indonesia has the most casualties...around 25,700 and still rising. They even mass-buried the dead! Aceh got the biggest hit, and I hope all those members of the GAM (or Free Aceh Movement translated) are all dead! They've been revolting for more than 25 years now!
samanthafung
DGA, I have been thinking of you as I remember (if my memory is correct) you come from Indonesia.

Glad to hear from you.

Amidst all this bad news, some good. The two students of mine who were in Sri Lanka when the wave hit have been located and are OK. Very distressed by what happened to them out there but safe and now back in the UK. They have seen places they visited and friends made disappear in a matter of a few minutes. Defies comprehension really.

However, to a point, good news.

liebe_klavier
i heard the news in hong kong too....it's so sad.... i can't do anything...except to donate...

As far as I'm aware, the family I knew (their son went to the last school I taught at) has not yet reared their heads. It's looking very unlikely that they survived.

Oh god, that is awful. The communications are very bad though, so let's hope they have survived

I dont kno anyone who was out there but it is a horrible disaster and one the world will remember for decades to come

People think that

over 150,000 have died

a million are left homeless

thousands are missing (probably mostly dead)

Im glad most of u kno that family and friends are safe

The pictures on the news make it look like a war zone. I can't begin to imagine what it must really be like out there. At least aid is starting to get through so there's more hope for the survivors. I'm sure everyone on these forums has done something to help and we all send our sympathy and love to the people of South East Asia.

And all the people worldwide affected by the tsunami.

This is from Malaysia..

We are alright as we are not at the coastal area..

remember i told some of you bout Penang Island which i went approximately 2 or 3 weeks before the tsunami? The sandy beaches are gone... sad.gif

Phuket's PP island is badly effected by the tsunami..

Those out there, plz pray for those deceased and donate to the unfortunate ones..they really need our kindness and help..

may God bless you !!
Amber
Just want to send my love and sympathy to people in South East Asia, also others worldwide who have been affected by this tragedy. Having travelled in the region in the past, I have very fond memories of the most wonderful, friendly, gentle people, and I wish so much they were not going through this unimaginable horror.

Special love and hugs to those here on the Board who have been personally affected. I know I often post witty and humorous comments in other threads, but this doesn't detract from the shock, disbelief, pain and sadness I feel about this disaster. And somehow, making a donation seems so ineffectual in the face of the aid that is needed.

love

Amber
