What are you studying music for? This question is especially for young students and adult learners, not teachers. Because of course, I believe that not everybody in this forum is sure of a full career in music.

Because I have always loved music and have wanted all my life to be able to play an instrument.
I am an adult beginner on the piano and started 10 years ago.

Because I wanted to learn piano since I was 10.
Being the eldest of 4 with one manual wage coming in it never seemed to be a possibility.
Then when I was 14 I got the chance to begin.

I have always wanted to play piano since Junior and senior school but places were limited.
I ended up playing violin instead at 8yrs old until leaving.
Now at 32 (33 next week

) I've been playing piano for the last 5ish yrs, started playing violin again in 2 orchestras and just bought a cello for xmas/birthday combined !
It's brilliant and I can't get enough of it ! Can't speak for my hubby and 3 children though

It's like why do people do sport if they're never destined to have it as a career? It's fun! and if something comes out of it, even better!

And without a career, you can still play in bands and orchestras or sing in choirs and any other groups you want, so it still equals out!

I study music because it's what I love most!!! My high points in the day (at school) are music, choir(s), quartet practice, vocal techniques (I just started!) and music theory! I can't get enough of it because it's so lovely and fun!

Good question.
I do it for the challenge of new music, because I enjoy practising, and it helps me meet people who I instantly have something in common with.

I just enjoy it, i like playing with a flute choir etc... Theres also something satisfying about finishing a piece you have been working on, or playing it in front of a large audience and the lights and everything.

But no, I'm not looking for a career in music.

I love playing well, it gives me such a buzz, and I have had lots of great opportunities in Music. Without it, I wouldn't have played with James Galway, Jeanne Galway and the London Mozart Players (eh Helen?), met one of my best friends, got into national music finals. I can't imagine life without it now!
