Full Version: That New Logo
Forums > ABRSM > Forums Cafe
Mad Tom
A while ago there was a lot of discussion about the new logo - its aesthetics, the image it projects etc. ...

Some (many ?) of us , for various reasons, preferred the old logo, but one reason for this preference was never stated. It is time to come clean ...

The old logo was a nice pale blue. So you could have a browser window open in the background on your workstation at work, and no one even noticed it smile.gif .

The new logo is bright red. Every time you go to a new sub-forum, or refresh your screen the browser goes back to the top of the page. The logo screams out from your screen and everyone can see that you have something going on that is not work-related sad.gif .

The company I work for has pretty much the same logo (similar size/colours) so I get away with it! tongue.gif biggrin.gif

To be honest I had not even noticed. Such things don't bother me.

Me too... tongue.gif I thought I must be the only one to do this! biggrin.gif

Someone needs to write a browser plugin that turns forum pages into something that looks like a presentation! laugh.gif

Now you've mentioned it, I realise I too have the click-load-scroll-down move down pat too biggrin.gif

Yep, me too! biggrin.gif

For me, it wasn't so much that people didn't notice the old logo. It was more that it actively looked official and work-like. In fact it looked a bit like the National School of Government logo which is very work-related. It was only when you got to one of the posts that is full of smilies that it stopped looking official!

You could try using the Lo-Fi option. That gets rid of the logo.

Haha biggrin.gif this made me smile. I'm in the same boat as most of you. I've now perfected the load and scrole movement so that when it loads fully it just looks like some text im reading smile.gif

The old logo looked so regal and respectable, but this latest effort is just amateur looking blink.gif

I guess I'm a logo snob laugh.gif

You can disable automatic loading of images. I haven't done this for ages, not since I was using dialup, but browsers still have that option. It's still there in Firefox - edit -> preferences -> Load images automatically

When did it change?
I'm not sure I ever saw the logo before this. Perhaps it's the same on the certificates?

Getting it right is vital when it comes to logos.

The government paid a lot of money for this - http://www.ogc.gov.uk/

(look at it sideways!)
anacrusis
At the time YAP gave us a little script to chop it off - I applied that, and never see the new one if on my own computer. At work, I do and it sort of blobs at me every time I peek at the forum. I guess that makes me less likely to go foruming in my precious teabreak time...

Some devious people I know specifically use this browser:

Because it looks like they're doing some sort of suitably imposing coding....!

Lynx!! wub.gif

It's what we had on the university unix-based vt-100 systems when I first started on the web (1994)...aaah, happy days biggrin.gif

wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif people who know what lynx is (and I'm not referring to the deodorant) wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

(anyone remembers gopher?)

But anyway - if you have adblock plus, you can block images selectively.

I used to run Lynx on my Solaris box at home... SSH session from work to home meant I could browse the net from a terminal and look like I was working (this was obviously in the quiet periods!).

Oh, and there was always X11 tunneling over SSH if I wanted to open a proper browser on the sly which wouldn't be subject to the policies of the proxy! tongue.gif

Hrm, memories of running eggdrops and trialling a MUD server on my 'nix box... *sigh*

So's mine : I wouldn't worry! biggrin.gif

I had a Commodore 64 in the early-mid 80s. The best program I could write on said machine was as follows :

20 GOTO 10

Actually I did get rid of a virus all by myself once, and I was very proud of getting my computer running again without any help. It took 6 hours of hard work... biggrin.gif

However, just two days later, the computer broke terminally from a completely different problem...

rofl.gif - in that case mine has 65 bits because I dropped it last year and a piece broke off. I stuck it back with black electrical tape.

If you only have a 7-bit computer that explains why you can't do pound signs, as you need another bit for them.
