Daughter (12) just took her Grade 5 singing exam. On her first piece the accompanist had to start the intro again (before she started) and then halfway through turned 2 pages at once and got lost. Daughter carried on, and the accompanist eventually stopped the piece and they started from the middle again.

Other pieces were good, unaccompanied v good, bang on in tune and time (Santa Lucia). Aural OK, and sightreading...well a restart and very approximate!.

Hoping for a merit for her, now just have to wait a week to find out.....

Looks like a bit bad luck, but on the other hand a chance for your daughter to show, that she is very good.
fingersCrossed.gif for her and for you.

If it is clear the accompanist went wrong, a good examiner will take that into account and not penalise the candidate.

I hope that helps to reassure you Dawn.

He did apologise to the examiner and say that he turned 2 pages at once - and it was Scarlatti's Le Violette which is full of little entries and very similar but not quite all the way through!
Kate apologised to him too, which was a nice touch, I think. Fingers crossed.

Well done to your daughter for keeping her nerve! biggrin.gif
Daughter (will be 11 by then! smile.gif ) takes Grade 5 piano in a couple of weeks. Whole family are very very bored of her pieces.

But not so bored as we are of the songs from the school play. ill.gif

Roll on the summer holidays.

Good luck to your daughter! Mine practices piano on the digital with headphones so we don't have that problem...

Oh and I felt quite ill listening outside when it went wrong. Felt better then the accompanist told us what happened!
Now it's just my turn tomorrow ill.gif ill.gif ill.gif

I'm sure that the examiner would take into account how professional your daughter was and that it was the accompanist who went wrong, so try not to worry. It does sound like your DD coped very well. biggrin.gif fingersCrossed.gif

Good Luck for tomorrow.

Exam Session B. Grade 8. In 5 days.

Blues Concerto is there. There is always the chance I could muck up a bit in the middle, or at the end but I did a run-through with an audience last wednesday and it went well.

Concertino- DAMN THOSE STACCATO SEMIQUAVERS! I mean they are alright but they could be a damnsight better, but my tongue and my fingers don't seem to want to work in unison. Everything else in it sounds nice though.

Scherzando Sax- I've been playing this now for a year. practically perfect, I need this to go well.

Scales: The Bane of my life. Majors are fine. Minors are a pain in the ###### especially melodic ones.

Aurals: Love these babies, and having just done AS Level music they seem to be going well, Just the sight singing may be a bit um interesting.

Sight-Reading: Could go well, or um die.

5 days to rectify Minors and Staccato's. Gaah.

On the bright side, 5 days till the rest of my life biggrin.gif

Good luck - your exam is the day before my daughter's G7 violin (eek!). 3 days left to correct rather out of tune minor scales (very high!!) and sort out last minute glitches with one of the pieces - why can't she slow down then it won't be a problem!! Am still bribing her with sessions on the sax if she does violin practise without throwing a prima donna strop!

It went alright today actually smile.gif Karvol and Adrenaline saved the day. Pieces were good. Slight muck up on the scales and the second sight singing (why they put octave jumps in sight singing in a sax exam god only knows.) Everything else was alright smile.gif

I think Ive passed, but I have no idea what with.

Phew - G7 violin all over!! So proud of my little girl to go in and do that exam, a bit tearful with nerves as she went in, but she performed her pieces really well, a couple of slips but nothing major, and she played her socks off! She thinks the scales were OK (had a brain freeze on a dominant 7th but OK apart from that), sightreading OK and thinks she did OK on the aural, a few ums when it came to test D - discussing the piece, so fingers crossed!

Daughter's results arrived today - Grade 7 Violin - 118. Initially daughter a little disappointed as it's only 2 marks short of merit, and scales and aural marks a lot lower than expected, but reminded quickly by teacher that it's still a fantastic achievement at age 11, so now very happy!

Well done to daughter, and it is a great achievement especially at such a young age. I think there can easily be more than 10 marks depending on the examiner.

Our group had quite a lot of distinctions but they ranged from 130-136 with the mode being 134 so all very similar. Interestingly, apart from one very musical child and from my quick scan of the sheet, it was only the choristers who got distinctions. I don't have the report yet but I do wonder if an extra mark was found to push it up to distinction level.

As for the other problem - it was a misunderstanding on my part! blush.gif

Very well done indeed to h-p-daughter! hurrah.gif Any pass in such a high grade at 11 is an amazing achievement and to be within touching distance of a merit (while frustrating) is just further proof of what a talented and hard working girl she obviously is. I hope you're both feeling very proud of her now - glad her teacher is too. biggrin.gif

Well done for all these amazing results..... JMNW, Little Miss Horseplay and Sax Lad etc. Really good results!

My DD has 12 days I think until her exam. I feel a little better after I heard her lesson today. She usually has lessons when I'm not here, but I took her to her teacher today so heard it all! Maybe she will pass after all.

Mind you- she'll have to live that long to be able to take her exam. She is being a bit of a madam- well a lot of one!

Was heartened to see her teacher's daughter today. She is the same age as my daughter. Teachers DD has her Gr 7 tomorrow and she was refusing to practice or at least was making a fuss about it. Ahhhh the delights of 12 year olds.....
