Hello,
When I was a toddler, in the mid-late 1970s, my mother borrowed an LP from the local library for me. I only had it for a fortnight but the catchy songs it contained still occasionally come back to haunt me even after all this time, and I find myself singing them while I'm doing the housework or driving to work! I now have a 1 year-old son, and would love to track down a copy for him.
If only I knew the title, then I'm sure eBay would come up trumps eventually.
I think it may have been based on the alphabet, but am not absolutely sure. The only definite clues I have are snippets of the lyrics, e.g.
Tick, Tock, I am a clock, a grandfather clock, it's a quarter-to-eight, it's getting late...
and
I am a vacuum cleaner, friend of the family, you've never seen a vacuum cleaner working as hard as me and then something about it having found a five pound note.
and
...everybody likes to ride on a tube train
and
at the animals' party.
Not much to go on, I know!
I've tried Googling a few times over the last few years, but the closest I got was a post here (hence the decision to try this interesting site), and a link to a DJ's (now-deleted) MySpace page, who claimed he'd re-mixed some tracks from it!
All leads gratefully received.
Nick.

I know the one! but can't remember the title
I'm visiting my parents next month and will see if I can find it (if the box of old LPs is still around).

Was it one of the Play School albums?
Nice thought, and I had high hopes as Play School was a big hit with us at the time. But no Vacuum Cleaner song, so I suspect not
But thanks for the suggestion.

We had the lp as kids, but there is sadly no trace of it in the house any more. I would also love to get hold of it again. Have you had any success tracking it down? There was also a song about a big red bus, I think a xylophone tune with skeletons (?) and many others. The only one I remember more than a few words of is the vacuum cleaner one. I think it went like this, but my memory may not be right:
I am a vacuum cleaner, friend of the family
you've never seen a vacuum cleaner working as hard as me.
Look what I've found in my tummy, look I've found a five pound note,
better give it back to mummy, she can buy a nice new coat.
I am a vacuum cleaner, friend of the family
you've never seen a vacuum cleaner working as hard as me.

That's a clue as to when the song was written! My first graduate salary in 1975 was ?2895 pa, and that was very respectable at the time. I don't remember how much a coat cost, but certainly a lot less than it would now!

did anybody else have the green hardback book called "i can count" that came with a cassette? It was sometime in the early 80s. It had a "12 days of christmas" structure so you repeated all the items at each iteration. I can only remember
one. I can count one. One fat juicy green melon.
two. I can count two. Two elephants in a zoo, one fat juicy green melon.
The green melon bit is to the "hi-tiddly hi ti - pom pom" tune with the syllables of melon separated over the pom poms. That must be the strangest sentence I have ever written.

New member here - apologies for intrusion into this thread but you might be pleased to know that I HAVE a CD version of this LP. I bought a copy of the LP for my mum at Christmas, having scoured all sources for one for years and my brother burned it to CD so I could have a copy too - happy memories of it as a child. It is called My Very Own ABC Record by Ernest & Rosemary Budden (sp?).
Every song is an utter delight, the music, lyrics and production are superb and I play it in the car for my 4 and 2 year old all the time. I wish they'd re-release it - much better than the current toddler songs on CD we have.
If you message me or email me I'd be happy to post you a copy of the CD.
If you want a reminder of all the songs here they are:
A - Acrobat - I wish that I were an acrobat, rolling and tumbling on the mat
B - Bus - The big red bus is taking us along the busy streets
C - Clock - Tick tick I am a clock a grandfather clock it's a quarter to eight...
D - Drum - I love to go a marching to the rummiting of a drum
E - Elephant - If only I could blow my nose
F - Fairground - There's a lot of excitement at the fair
G - Who has the prettiest garage? Our car!
H - Horse - If I had a horse I'd ride and ride into the land of make believe
I - I scream you scream we all scream for Ice Cream
J - Jungle -
K - Kitten - ...trying to be a full grown caT
L - London is a big place built in a valley
M - Music
N - Nightingale
O - Owl Tuwit Tuwoo.. I don't give a fig for you you you
P - Plane
Q - Quack - All the ducks in the pond go quack quack quack, all except for the little one at the back
R - Rain
S - School - school school school is a jolly good place to be
T - Tricycle
U - Underground
V - Vaccuum Cleaner - I am the vaccum cleaner friend of the family!

Hi Nicky!
That's hardly "intrusion", it's what I was hoping for.
Wow, I'm so delighted, that's absolutely incredible. I can hardly wait to hear it after 35 years or whatever it is. My 1-year-old son has a fascination with clocks and owls too, so it will be a real winner with him as well.
That's the very record, no doubt at all.
Yes, I wish they'd re-release it too, it would sell like hot cakes if properly marketed.
I will be in touch.
Thanks again,
Nick

Thanks, Nicky, I'll be standing by the letterbox awaiting the postman!
P.S. For the benefit of other people looking at this thread later, the record was relased in
1972 on the
Music for Pleasure label, catalogue number
MFP50018 and the artists were
Ernest and Rosemary Burden
P.P.S. Pic from Amazon here:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61JF...axL._SS500_.jpg and
Gramophone's review from December 1973:
"My Own ABC Record" is an entertaining collection of 26 linked alphabet songs sung by Ernest and Rosemary Burden, with a children's chorus in some of them. Many styles, tempos and moods are ingeniously exploited. Excellent for the very young (MFP50018, 71p).

Yes, in fact I still have my copy!
When I was at University it was almost a standing joke that the only two LP's that virtually everybody in my year group had in common were
1. All Aboard
2. The Kids from Fame

Thanks to Nicky's amazing efficiency and kindness, I now have a copy of the record!
It's just as I recall it, and is a hit with my one year old. It even cheered him up this afternoon when he was otherwise inconsolable.
THANK YOU again
P.S. Does anyone know of any other records by the Burdens (Rosemary and/or Ernest), or what became of them? A bit of Googling has thrown up a couple of early 1980s Noddy LPs, but that's it.

Still not managed to find out much about the Burdens, though a kind chap from Kingston Chamber Orchestra told me that they performed Ernest Burden's "Gandalf the Wizard" in 2003, and that he had been in touch with the then-retired Mr Burden on the telephone at the time. So he may well still be with us.
Anyone know any more? Time for a new thread maybe?

You're going to have better luck sending personal messages to the members concerned - sometimes people don't log on regularly and when they do, they may not see the update to a thread that they posted in a while back. Whereas if you send a PM, they'll get an email (I think- at least, I always get an email when someone sends me a PM).
