Im based in North Wales and have a young piano student who has composed and played some excellent pieces - mixture of jazz/classical - Philip Glass style plus a bit more...... Does anyone have any information on competitions or such like that he could be considered for? Its been a long time since I performed any compositions at Liverpool. Chester and Manchester Music Festivals so any help would be much appreciated. Thank you! :-)

There is a music festival in Chester that has a composition element. I don't know the rules surrounding it and it may be too late for this year (something in the back of my mind says mid feb but can't recall if that's the closing date or festival date). Worth having a look though.

Perhaps a bit more advanced than you need at the moment, but you never know; you can find a fantastic resource for many worldwide composition competitions HERE . Some are pay to enter, some are free, some have restrictions but you can subscribe to email updates and sift through them at your leisure.

All the best,

Thanks for this. Do you know of any similar UK or Europe sites?

EPTA runs a composition competition every year.

Yamaha Junior Original Concert is an event aimed at young composers performing their own work (not just keyboard). It is held in Europe, but not yet in the UK, I believe.

Sibelius sponsors a Composer of the Year competition which is very active in the pre-teen and teen areas. The Sibelius site also lists a UK competition called Strictly Composing, but I don't know whether that's a one-off or an annual event.

I'm not sure how it works in the UK, but in Japan, there are corporate contests (mostly for publicity) inviting people to send in jingles and other short pieces of music, logos, artwork etc. to advertise new products or new public schemes of one sort and another.

Unfortunately not, but would be interested to hear of any. That site does include plenty of European competitions though.

Thanks for this info. The Yamaha Junior series is only open to those studying at a Yamaha School unfortunately. I have been in contact with EPTA and am now going to try and find out more about hte Sibelius competition. Many thanks.

I am on the committee of the Wirral Festival (end March), but we dont have a composition element. I may suggest we consider one for next year
