I am looking for ideas for a violin competition piece for my son. He loves pieces with a Hungarian Dance/ Gypsy feel. He has played several of the Brahms Hungarian Dances and other similar pieces. A year ago he picked up Monti Czardas for a competition and it has been his "party piece" ever since. He now needs another.

He does play a wider range of pieces but he is only young so the sort of pieces where he really connects musically at the moment and gives the best account of himself are ones in that sort of style. His level (as suggested by Czardas I guess) is just post Grade 8.

Any ideas for what we might consider technically a little beyond the Monti but not too far would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Hmm... a few ideas, though I'm not a violinist. Good luck!

Rachmaninoff Danse Hongroise op. 6 no. 2
de Falla Danse Espagnole
Bloch Niguun
Sarasate Romanza Andaluza

Kroll's Banjo and Fiddle is brilliant fun like the Czardas for a young party piece.
Also Danse Macabre.
violin123
Bruch Swedish Dances (set for grade 8 2012-15)

Bartok Roumanian Folk Dances (two were in the old grade 7, but the others especially number 6 are just past grade 8)

Claudia's Mum
Sarasate Zigeunerweisen - not sure what level this is
Drdla Eight Hungarian Dances - the last one is good

Copeland's own arrangement for violin and piano of his Hoe-down is a lot of fun.
