Full Version: Dip LCM Choices (Singing)
Forums > ABRSM > Diplomas
MKP
My cousin is planning to take her DipLCM in Singing early next year and has asked me to present her choices (possible choices) in the forum and see what you think.

So here are some of her possible choices. She is a coloratura soprano

-Qui la voce (not going on to the mad scene)- I puritani
-Sei tu m'ami
-Chi il bel sogno di doretta- La rondine
-Porgi amor- Mozart
-I attempt from loves sickness to fly- Purcell
-Du bist wie eine blume- Schumann

what do you think? or might you a have any further suggestions?

Difficult to advise without hearing her voice, but my first thought was that Porgi Amor is more for a dramatic soprano and less likely to be suitable for her voice. OK for a concert perhaps but I'm not sure I would present it for a Dip. I also thought the choices weighed a little heavy on the Italian language. I think I would have offered another German and another English for better balance. I attempt from Love's Sickness would, IMO, need to be ornamented well to be difficult enough for diploma.
You say she is coloratura - what about Purcell's Hark the Echoing Air? (Also with ornaments).
Just my opinion, others may have different views.
Presumable she is getting advice from a teacher?

Thank you for your suggestions. Yes, I agree about "Loves sickness" although it is on the repertoire list for ATCL and "Porgi amor" (although her voice is substantial, not a light voice by any means). I know she has also studied these songs, will have to check with her to get the full list of choices.

-Verborgenheit- wolf
-The monk and his cat- Barber
The soldiers wife- Tchaikovsky (in russian)
She is working with a teacher but i always like to keep an eye on her :-)

I'd be a bit concerned also about the choices. The syllabus states that the programme must be 'broadly representative of the historical periods' with 'at least ONE item from the Baroque or Classical periods, at least ONE item from the Romantic period, and at least ONE item from the 20th or 21st centuries'. I'm not sure that at the moment she's got anything which might be classed as 20th/21st century.

I also had a quick look at the syllabus but I couldn't see any of those songs on the DipLCM list. 'I attempt from love's sickness' is on the ALCM list. According to the syllabus 'At least ONE song must be chosen from the list'. As I say though, I only had a quick look, but it's worth checking.

Hi,
Just to clarify, the last item on the repertoire list is "any one aria from Aria Antiche except Caro Mio Ben"...I think she has done most of these, and put Sei tu mami on the list she gave me.
Also, for 20th century, The barber piece is from the 1950's so i dont see the problem there....do tell me if i'am missing something.

That seems OK then. I wasn't including the Barber as I was just looking at your original list. She also needs to consider how the songs work together as a set.

Thats true, although it can often be difficult to show varied elements of diversity and present a balanced programme of pieces. Would be much easier if it was a programme of say french art songs, or german lieder that was required.
