Just a quick heads up for the Greenwich Early Music Festival, at the usual Royal Naval College base. It's running this year from
Thursday-Saturday (8th-10th November) rather than the usual Friday-Sunday.
Hoping to be there on at least one of those days.

Presuming you're getting the DLR, and presuming you'll be with wheelchair, the easiest interchange is at Shadwell : which is two stops further down the line from Westferry (the closest interchange with Cutty Sark trains), but is cross-platform.

Good plan. There used to be a Manchester / London City shuttle service which I used to use sometimes travelling to Canary Wharf. Unfortunately the crunch squashed it - it was often cheaper than the ludicrous Crewe / Euston fare (now a bargain at a mere GBP229 for a standard return).
Need to make my mind up - a number of options for that weekend I notice...

Ah, that makes sense now, nonsense duly removed.

Aug 10 2012, 07:28 AM
Cutty Sark is the nearest DLR stop - the venue itself is not far from there (5 min walk really).
The thing about the DLR line is it is a funny shape
Imagine a railway that's kind of a cross-shape, and imagine the trains sort of run east-west and north-south. If you're coming from east or west, you'll need to change from one train on to a different one that goes north-south, because your destination is on the south arm of the cross.
Of course the real DLR actually nothing like a cross-shape but this sort of describes the problem

Basically, from London City airport, you won't be able to get a direct DLR to Cutty Sark. Barry is saying that while you could, in theory, make the change at Westferry, the easiest change for a wheelchair will be Shadwell.

So, revival of the Greenwich thread now that people are more likely to have started to make their final arrangements: who is coming on which day? Is there somewhere nearby we can put our feet up and have a coffee, meet up with each other, talk each other into and out of our purchases?

I'm a Friday person, and nobody is to let me leave the festival with a harp.

I will almost certainly be wearing something purple and carrying a purple rucksack. Unless it is snowing, I will be wearing sandals, and there is a high chance they will be purple too

Those naughty people at the Early Music Shop were advertising their instrument kits on Facebook as an 'ideal Christmas gift, visit our stand in the Painted Hall for more info'.
I don't have anyone to buy one as a gift for...but hey, perhaps that means I need one for me!

ARGH! Please make sure I don't go home with a build-it-yourself lute

(Actually, at least those are slighly more affordable than, say, the DIY harpsichord. A DIY knee harp might be better on the bank balance though!)

Looks like I shall be holed up much of the day in the Dan Laurin recorder masterclass, if I can make head or tail of where that is. It says King Charles Court, but the map only shows the hall, the chapel and the Cutty Sark so I shall investigate.

Hi RoseRodent
King Charles Court is Trinity Laban, i.e. the first building on the river-side that you come to if you arrive via Cutty Sark. It is opposite the Painted Hall.

Has Trinity moved? The only thing I recall about my Trinity audition is going up a big staircase into a small and unpleasant waiting room full of chain smokers. Couldn't tell you where it was, though! Don't even remember if I ever did my audition or if I decided to go home after hating it... or maybe it was an open day I went to!! Trinity have been at Greenwich since 2001, if it was before that, you'd have been at their former premises at Mandeville Place, W1.

Have just been massively overthinking my various travel options, mainly that going from the railway station I can walk to is quite expensive (if you don't want to have stupid restricitons on when you can come home), whereas going cheaply from the tube station means driving there at silly o'clock in order to definitely get a parking space.
Realised that the travel costs are usually quite an insignificant part of the total costs of Greenwich day, so the cost of convenience is probably not worth spendng all this time worry about

Hmm
Home => Crewe about 30 minutes
Crewe => Euston about 90 minutes
Euston => Greenwich tube or DLR => imponderable
Assume 2.5 to 3.0 hours door to door
Cost? Depending on what tickets I could have got for London, anywhere between 60 and 229 for standard fare on Crewe/London return and I have an Oyster card for tube/DLR
