Just a quick heads up for the Greenwich Early Music Festival, at the usual Royal Naval College base. It's running this year from Thursday-Saturday (8th-10th November) rather than the usual Friday-Sunday.

Hoping to be there on at least one of those days. smile.gif

Good-oh. I've not been for about three years, so it's time I paid another visit!
andante_in_c
I'm anticipating going on Friday 9 November. smile.gif

sad.gif

Will be otherwise engaged all 3 days - better for my bank balance I suppose.
Maizie
I'll be going on one day, probably the Thursday or Friday, will of course be nice to see people to help me spend my money tongue.gif
wendywoo
Saturday for me, followed by Dan Laurin concert. wub.gif
RoseRodent
I have tickets booked for Friday. I hope I actually get to go this year! Flying in to London City early morning and home late at night.

Presuming you're getting the DLR, and presuming you'll be with wheelchair, the easiest interchange is at Shadwell : which is two stops further down the line from Westferry (the closest interchange with Cutty Sark trains), but is cross-platform. smile.gif

Good plan. There used to be a Manchester / London City shuttle service which I used to use sometimes travelling to Canary Wharf. Unfortunately the crunch squashed it - it was often cheaper than the ludicrous Crewe / Euston fare (now a bargain at a mere GBP229 for a standard return).

Need to make my mind up - a number of options for that weekend I notice...

Ah, that makes sense now, nonsense duly removed.
Maizie
Cutty Sark is the nearest DLR stop - the venue itself is not far from there (5 min walk really).
The thing about the DLR line is it is a funny shape smile.gif
Imagine a railway that's kind of a cross-shape, and imagine the trains sort of run east-west and north-south. If you're coming from east or west, you'll need to change from one train on to a different one that goes north-south, because your destination is on the south arm of the cross.

Of course the real DLR actually nothing like a cross-shape but this sort of describes the problem biggrin.gif Basically, from London City airport, you won't be able to get a direct DLR to Cutty Sark. Barry is saying that while you could, in theory, make the change at Westferry, the easiest change for a wheelchair will be Shadwell.

Edit: Was replying to the 'nonsense' (which was not nonsense) that RoseRodent had written

So, revival of the Greenwich thread now that people are more likely to have started to make their final arrangements: who is coming on which day? Is there somewhere nearby we can put our feet up and have a coffee, meet up with each other, talk each other into and out of our purchases? wink.gif

I'm a Friday person, and nobody is to let me leave the festival with a harp.
katyjay
I shall most likely be there on the Friday. Not sure about the other days.

I shall have a list of stuff I'm NOT going to buy this year.....

And I shall have a credit card ph34r.gif
Maizie
I'll make it the Friday as well, as that seems to be a likely day for bumping in to people smile.gif
barry-clari
Depending on teaching commitments, it'll be either Friday or Saturday. smile.gif
katemorrisviolin
I'm going on the friday and am beside myself with excitement about it already. I shall be there with my lovely Dad who is a lute player/singer. I'm flying in at banana o'clock in the morning from the channel islands.

Would be good to meet! If I'm there on the Friday, I'll let you know which colour large holdall I'll be carrying around, so you can spot me/us biggrin.gif
RoseRodent
Well I shall be the one in a giant off-roader electric wheelchair who currently has blue hair at the front due to a dye accident, so I shall leave the red carnation at home. Is there a coffee bar of some kind down there? I shall bring the reqisite second mortgage for the purchase of beverages in London.

Yes, there is : the prices are OK by London standards and the cakes are excellent biggrin.gif
katemorrisviolin
I would love to meet any forumites for coffee and cake. I am medium build, medium height medium aged medium brown haired lady so will have to wear something outrageous to identify me. I shall give it some thought. What fun! Maybe some sort of hat is in order, worn at a jaunty angle party1.gif
Maizie
My profile pic has a hat, but I almost certainly won't have one on the day (and if I do, it's not likely to be that one!)
I will almost certainly be wearing something purple and carrying a purple rucksack. Unless it is snowing, I will be wearing sandals, and there is a high chance they will be purple too smile.gif

I shall be there, resembling my profile photo.

And probably supervised by someone who's meant to be saying supervising things like "No, you don't need another recorder" but is instead saying supervising things like "shall I help you carry your purchases?"

I should have brought my husband, I can ask his opinion on just about any purchase and he will always encourage me to go ahead. Hubby, do I need a Rottenburgh descant? Hubby, darling, do I need a harp? But I need this viol... don't I?

barry-clari
Can now say that it's likely that I'll be there on the Friday as well. I'll probably arrive early and start browsing immediately, being a local...
CJB
I'm now suffering from shoe envy Maizie. They look comfy and purple.
Lucysop
Hi
I will be there on the Thursday for Haydn's Creation, just wondered if anyone was coming then or on that day, might be nice for me to see some of the faces that goes with the names...?

smile.gif
Tenor Viol
I'm hoping to go - Friday is the likeliest, but it's a nuisance as I wont be able to get an early train due to cost.I can't do Saturday as it's concert day and we've got a period instrument band in too!

I will be around in Greenwich on the Friday but unlikely to be free during much of the day...... sad.gif
Maizie
Those naughty people at the Early Music Shop were advertising their instrument kits on Facebook as an 'ideal Christmas gift, visit our stand in the Painted Hall for more info'.

I don't have anyone to buy one as a gift for...but hey, perhaps that means I need one for me! rolleyes.gif

ARGH! Please make sure I don't go home with a build-it-yourself lute laugh.gif (Actually, at least those are slighly more affordable than, say, the DIY harpsichord. A DIY knee harp might be better on the bank balance though!)
RoseRodent
Looks like I shall be holed up much of the day in the Dan Laurin recorder masterclass, if I can make head or tail of where that is. It says King Charles Court, but the map only shows the hall, the chapel and the Cutty Sark so I shall investigate.
katemorrisviolin
I shall be there with my Dad on friday and I only see him three or four times a year, so it would be unfair to arrange to meet up with other forumites when I'm supposed to be having a day out with him. But I shall be there in my blue puffer jacket, trainers, red bag, long brown hair and broad grin on my face, drooling over rennaissance recorders, so do say hello if you think you recognise me from this description!

Hi RoseRodent

King Charles Court is Trinity Laban, i.e. the first building on the river-side that you come to if you arrive via Cutty Sark. It is opposite the Painted Hall.

Has Trinity moved? The only thing I recall about my Trinity audition is going up a big staircase into a small and unpleasant waiting room full of chain smokers. Couldn't tell you where it was, though! Don't even remember if I ever did my audition or if I decided to go home after hating it... or maybe it was an open day I went to!! Ah, what an impression it made upon my delicate youth. laugh.gif

Trinity have been at Greenwich since 2001, if it was before that, you'd have been at their former premises at Mandeville Place, W1.

Have just been massively overthinking my various travel options, mainly that going from the railway station I can walk to is quite expensive (if you don't want to have stupid restricitons on when you can come home), whereas going cheaply from the tube station means driving there at silly o'clock in order to definitely get a parking space.

Realised that the travel costs are usually quite an insignificant part of the total costs of Greenwich day, so the cost of convenience is probably not worth spendng all this time worry about rolleyes.gif

I had hoped to make it this year after several years off. Unfortuantely, my main choir concert is a week earlier than usual on 10th. And I can't escape from work to go tomorrow....

Given that I was discussing possible German cellos last week, probably just as well - I might end up with another tenor viol otherwise..... ph34r.gif

Hmm

Home => Crewe about 30 minutes
Crewe => Euston about 90 minutes
Euston => Greenwich tube or DLR => imponderable

Assume 2.5 to 3.0 hours door to door

Cost? Depending on what tickets I could have got for London, anywhere between 60 and 229 for standard fare on Crewe/London return and I have an Oyster card for tube/DLR

Baz, Maizie.....
