Hi,

I was just wondering...

What's your record highest (or lowest if you like...) mark for a music exam and what sort of mark do you usually get (perhaps the average)?

I could have made this into a poll but it'd either have to be a really long list or not very specific...
weejen
The highert mark Ive ever got was 130 in my grade 6 and I thought i had actually failed it! The lowest mark Ive ever got was 116 in my grade 5 which i was still really pleased with because it was my first exam!
MBC_Tiger
I usually get about 23-26 out of 30 for piano pieces and perfect marks on aurals.i'm doing flute though, grade 3 and thats my first flute exam, and grade 5 singing so i don't know for them.

carys
Lowest 105 (Grade 5 Singing), highest 139 (Grade 1 Viola).

Grade 8 singing was my highest (I think the examiner must have got confused!) as I acheived a mark of 147! My lowest however was 101 for Grade 6 Flute, In general most of my exams have been marked around 120.
Ariel
The highest mark of Piano pratical is 130 in G2 and G4.and the lowest mark is 117 in G1 and G3(My sight reading and aural is the poorest)
Helen

Well done NIX! Did u get anything for your 147? cos when I got 145 for grade 6 piano, I got a letter and £100 as it was "The Sheila Mossman Memorial prize" for high marks @ grade 6,7 & 8 piano. Just wondering!

No I didn't get any money!Wish I had though! I had a different certificate to the normal ones, it was kind of embossed in gold and had posh lettering, it was accompanied by a letter from the head of ABRSM sending his congratulations etc. I would have preferred money though!Oh well ill have to try and get that a similar level in my diploma and Ill let you know if they send me owt!
danielf90
I got 28/30 in 2 of my pieces 27/30 in the other, 17/18 in my aural, 22/24 in my scales BUT then i got an amazing 11/24 in my sight-reading: i find it sooo difficult, i really can't do it, i was telling the examiner how much i really couldn't do it and she said she'd give me an easy one, apparently it didn't help! lol o well i stil got a distinction,
Orionmiz
My lowest is 107 (Grade 4 Piano... that's because I don't like the teacher), and my highest is 130 (Grade 6 and 7 Piano). The average is around 118 to 119 (calculated from Grade 1 to Grade 8 Piano) (118.625 to be precise).

I only took once in my life time so far. That was the violin grade 5 and I 've got 134 for it.

You lot really make me feel bad, my lowest was 108 flute, can't remember what grade it was, but I had this major disaster with a piece of Mozart and got 16/30 for it, so I was quite pleased with the result.

My highest has been just 114, excluding theory, and I've never gotten over 23 for one of my pieces, is this normal??

Of course, if anyone doesn't yet know, the worst bit is aurals, but then I've always got around pass on them...

well I don't think I have this time though (grade 7 flute) but as I'm still awaiting my results, I can't say.

I think part of my problem is that I get so incredibly nervous, it's hard to play the flute with your hands shaking and sweating, you keep catching the trill keys and stuff.
nutter
my marks seem to just go up steadily! i got 116 for grade 1, 120 for grade 2 and 125 for grade 3. hope my grade 5 goes up too! tongue.gif
Nicola
my lowest is 108, grade 4 clarinet (however thats likely to change when my grade 6 comes through hehehe!i was gutted though!)
highest 125 which was either grade 1 or 5 clarinet i cant actually remember!
tremolololo
My highest was 130 for Grade 5. My lowest was 127 for Grade 3. Average=128.5 not counting theory (94%!) You COULD multiply your theory result by 1.5 to get it out of 150 but I wouldn't count that.

I got 101 for my first exam - Grade 5 flute and I was pretty happy!

I got 135 for Grade 8 Flute, 123 for Grade 2 Violin and 98 for Grade 5 Theory.

However, I failed Grade 5 Piano. I was really not very surprised as I found it so stressful - my hands were shaking so much I couldn't play. Weird really, I actually enjoyed my flute exams. I have come to the conclusion piano is harder, which doesn't help my confidence. Still, my teacher wouldn't let me resit as she was convinced I should have passed, so fingers crossed for Grade 6.

Up until I saw these messages, I still was surrounded by a warm happy glow, believing my marks to be not bad. Inspire me to practise more, oh God!
madmusic
For me:

Highest overall was 139 (Grade 2 Piano)
Lowest overall was 124 (Grade 4 Piano)

Highest for one piece was 30/30 smile.gif
madmusic
daniel90, don't worry. I always found sight reading hard, until I started this course of books called "Improve your sight-reading" by Paul Harris. They're REALLY good, you should try them smile.gif
cecilia
Improve you sight reading books...
on piano, have you noticed the colours get worse and worse, gloomier and gloomier, as you go up the grades... it's actually a relief when you get to grade 8 and it's BLACK as opposed to maroon, brown, grey... biggrin.gif
tzl_tzl
I have just calculated my average. I got 120.3
So that makes it 120.
jkhouse20
My results are as follows:

Highest: Grade 3 E Flat Saxophone (137)

Lowest: Grade 4 Piano (120)

The highest mark for a piece I've had is 29/30 for the 'Tango' in the 2003-2004 Grade 3 Piano syllabus.

My average score is 129 (which is a mark the examiners aren't allowed to give) so it could be either 128 or 130 - so I think I'll choose 130 as my average mark!!!
cecilia
are then examiners really not allowed to give 129??? I thought that was just a rumour. Can anybody find concrete evidence of that??? unsure.gif
My average is... um... *mutters calculations very fast* *freaks out and checks on computer calculator*
...
...
...
132 biggrin.gif
cecilia
and theory average is... 94. yay! biggrin.gif
jkhouse20
I was just told that the examiners couldn't give 129 by my piano teacher so i persumed that it was true. Does anyone else here know any different? Has anyone else every had a '129' mark for an exam?

Hi,

My highest is 139, and lowest 104. I have got almost all distinctions in my four instruments except grade 7 organ and grade 4 violin. However i'm not so proud with my 139 as I am with my 136 for grade 8 organ, since I did it in 5-6 months and had to work really hard since I was also preparing to do my A-levels. smile.gif
saxy gal
