I'm doing it too! I adore it! My teacher is a bit mad though, she's more of a child than me! What compositional techniques and study areas are you doing? What instruments do you play?
Write back please!

Good luck - you must have your exam in a couple of weeks then.

Will you go on to do the A level next year?

What about when you leave school will you carry on with music at university/music college?

Hi all ,

I'm a mature student and am at University however I'm also doing AS Music and am hoping to do the A Level. I am having the time of my life! I'm not sure whether to chose performing or composing as my main component next year tho!

I am enjoying the compositional element, but I do enjoy performing, as I'm not as shy as I used to be ! Anyone in the same position or got any advice?

Hi fellow AS students!!!! biggrin.gif

Yes im doing it with AQA so im studying Handel, Mozart and Mendelssohn as well!!!
For area of study 2 we are studying the Beatles and how their music changed. Its quite interesting and different actually, i think most ppl are doing Beethoven symphonies or something!!! laugh.gif
Naomi- I play piano, clarinet, saxophone, a bit of flute and guitar!!(used to play violin)
what instruments do you play?!

Yes im carrying on to Alevel next year and hopefully fingers crossed ill be able to do it at uni!
My teacher is really cool!!at our school we only have two proper classroom teachers. The head of music and my teacher!!the head is completely insane and comes in 2 help us with composition(only 2 in the class)! and my teacher is just really sweet and nice!! she also teaches me clarinet and sax so i think she is great!!! biggrin.gif laugh.gif

I play piano, flute, i do voice, a bit of guitar and drums.
For ours, we are with Edexcel so are studying Haydn, Wagner, and Debussy and for our second area we are doing pop and jazz (Van Morrison, Desmond Dekker, The Beatles, Carl Perkins, and Duke Ellington) and then for compositional techniques, Serialism and Minimalism.

I am going to do performance for my main part next year then go on to university hopefully! biggrin.gif

Hi there. I'm also doing AQA AS level Music this year. I have found it relatively enjoyable in comparison to my other subjects. Just out of interest, what types have pieces have people composed for Unit 2? Also, how 'in depth' are you studying the set works (Handel, Mozart, Mendelssohn)? It's just I am starting my revision and am not entirely sure how to go about it!!! For the other section of Unit 1 I am studying the development of the Requiem from Mozart to Benjamin Britten - however, it's such a huge topic and there is so much to know!! Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated!! biggrin.gif

Hi there. I am also currently doing AQA AS music and I am finding it really enjoyable - it is much more relaxing that my other subjects!! I therefore intend to continue with it at A2 Level. Just out of interest, what types of pieces have people composed for their Unit 2 Compositions? Also, how 'in depth' are you studying the set works (Handel, Mozart, Mendelssohn)? I am beginning to revise this week but am unsure exactly where to start and what to do!! Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

hi Jack!!

there are only 2 people in my music class and for composition we have both done a pop song, and for the other one I have linked it to Mendelssohn by structuring it in sonata form.(not sure what my mate has done!!)

My teacher has given us a list of what we need to revise so ill give it to you and hopefully it will help!!

Mendelssohn- background to comp, concert overtures, sonata form, instrumentation and learn some quotes for the essay part if you choose to write on this piece!!

Mozart- background to comp, galant style, rondo form, viennese classical music style, how he varied the theme in each variation, binary/rounded binary form, antecedent/consequent and quotes!!!!!

Handel- background to comp and anthems, instrumentation, texture, trumpet restrictions, ritornello principle, influences of diff countries, fugue/double fugue, phrygian cadence, suspensions, melismatic writing, notes inegales and quotes!!!!

Some of the things ive said are little things like suspensions and stuff but it will all help. it is quite important that you know a few quotes for each piece because in your essay you will need to make references to parts of the music and there is not better way than using quotes!! also lasts years paper included a question where you had to listen to part of mendelssohn and fill in the music- even if you cant get it from listening to it , if you know the quote wahoo your sorted!!!

err..... sorry for the long post hope it makes sense!!! laugh.gif

good luck for the exam......8th of June......... aaaaaaahahahhhh!!!!

Thank you Natalie for your post, it was very helpful. My teacher has spoken of musical quotations - are you going to quote simply bar numbers or actual sections of music that you will re-write? Do you know if we get additional manuscript paper in the exam for our essay questions? Thanks in advance.

glad i could help-if you need any more help just let me know!!

An example of a quote thing-"At bar 149 the final section of the development begins with a staccato version of the opening motif(see quote A)!!!"

so yes i will quote bar numbers in my sentence but then have an additional quote from the music. dont just throw in quotes here and there to show them you can memorise the music-make sure it is relevant to what you are saying!!
yes i think we get manuscript, we must do or how else are we going to write quotes!!
