Has anyone used this piano book? Around what age group would you use it for? Im pretty new to teaching and was thinking about using this with an 8 year old I will be teaching from next week. Thing is, I have been teaching her 10 year old sister ( who is my only other student right now) for the past two months using piano time, if I use a different book for the 8 yr old I could have sister and mum askin how come theyre both using different books.Or could I use a bit of each with both? For those who might not know what im talking about theres a website here

I don't know the book you're asking about, but it can be a good idea to use different books anyway for siblings who start within a short while of each other.

If one sibling is more able than the other, this can become glaringly obvious if they are using the same material - for example, if your new beginner shot ahead of her sister within a short while, this could be very demoralising for the sister!

If they query why you are using different books, just say that in your opinion the book you have chosen is more suitable for your new pupil - they'd be extremely unlikely to pursue it further. Piano Time is definitely a good book, though, and you could perhaps include the most popular pieces from that alongside the new book.

I've used three books of Piano World a few times with pupils. It's very good - it takes you through things that most other early tutors don't (good rhythms, black notes etc). There are plenty of interesting duets and the CD is useful too. Six to eight is about the right age group.

As has been said, it's good to use different books for members of the same family. It's better for the teacher too - if you've got seven or eight beginners, you don't want everyone playing the same pieces. I change between about six different tutors for beginners - depending on age and character. I don't use a book at all for the first two lessons or so and I then make my mind up which is the best book to use.

Have fun. smile.gif

I've used it mostly with 8 year old boys as they like the brashness and fun of the illustrations. I do find it moves quite fast in some aspects so (as in the case of all the tutor books I use) I tend to supplement it by lending other books with extra pieces before moving on.

I actually avoid having two siblings on the same book if I possibly can - much better to have them doing different things.

Easier on the ear for anyone who's around when they are practising too!
