Arban, i know what you mean. To get the best out of it you really need to know how to circumnavigate your way round it. Find the relevant bits so to speak. I don't use Arban half as much as i should but i do think it is still a very sound book. Still regarded as the Brass man's Bible.

arban is sooo annoying!! its funny though i managed to persuade my teacher to lend my copy to another guy she teaches, so i cant practice for the next week or so and he has to suffer it!!
there are some other good methods out there, but i suppose arban is good. its extremely painful but i know looking back it does help!

Hello,
Some of the exercises are really useful and are quite good to play. What i find really annoying is that it is very hard to put it on a stand coz its so big and it never stays open!!!!!Grr, anyway, hope u find something else u like instead of it..

my euphonium teacher just lent me her copy....although I did try and point out that I was likely to spill/break/ruin it in someway shape or form she insisted that I took it.....
It's still sitting in the carrier bag next to the euphonium....ah well

yea i know how you feel except the thing is a lot of the stuff is quite hard to sight-read in it (i think anyway!!) so you might want to at least have a glance over the stuff before your next lesson, even if you dont play too much of it!

It's a (is it originally for cornet?) book for brass players full of nasty studies and exercises! It's hateful!

yea it is originally a cornet method, because JB Arban was a cornet player, so personally i think its suited better to a cornet rather than trumpet. but then again a lot of the exercises work just as well on trumpet. i play both instruments but would tend to do arban exercises on cornet more often....

Even though I play the horn my teacher photocopies the harder exercises and makes me play them cos they're so difficult (and high!). Hopefully they're improving my high register........

Is the Arban books only for cornets or could a horn player use it too?

Any brass can use Arban even tuba. Their is a specific edition in F, so that would suit the horn.

I've picked a few of the tonguing exercises out of the Arban for my trombone playing daughter (9) and all my valve playing students use it too but generally along with other technical exercise books as it can be dull dull dull otherwise
