I believe there is an example of this in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto 1 (or 2?). It apparently sounds a third higher than the violin.
*Beth*
wow, you learn something new everyday! a third isn't bad, I was thinking more like a couple of octaves!
janexxx
I suppose it would be a violininininino

At the other extreme, a treble bass laugh.gif

A three-manual piano accordian! Three times the noise, arrgh!

Or the piccolo equivalent of the oboe - a sopranino oboe? That might be a bit piercing.
L'espirit Manouche!
One where you press a button and it makes you a hit single...

oops! silly me. nevermind.

I think a treble french horn would be bad, with yet another side with another thumb trigger and yet another set of confusing set of fingerings to learn and specific places when you should use them!
oboebunny
The instrument that's pitched a third above a normal violin in that Brandenburg Concerto is called a "Violino Piccolo" in my score biggrin.gif

And, the soprano oboe is called a Musette!
sarah-flute
I think piccolo simply means small doesn't it? I am certain I've heard of piccolo trumpets smile.gif

Yep, I've known someone who's surname was 'Lopicollo', literally meaning 'the small'. She was diminutive, too.

Seriously, some loon invented a "reverse" piano keyboard with the high notes at the bottom and vice versa. Why, I don't know! rolleyes.gif

Yes, there certainly was a left-handed piano in the news a few years ago. It was about the time No 3 son (who is left-handed) was starting piano lessons.

A piano with 15 octaves.

You'd need a piano stool on casters!

I read about that - it was a concert pinaist who was left handed and decided to get a custom piano. He loved it and, strangely enough, he could play from memory on his L handed piano whereas he had always had to use music before! An old friend of mine plays piano and violin, but doesn't like the piano because she's left handed.

Aparently lots of teachers tried the l handed piano to get a feeling for what their L handed students go through.

Another contender for the AB calender...?
SirPrancealot
it needs terrific wind pressure. be careful on the day.

laugh.gif

[but no, that poor instrument has been fully operational for so few years. there's just one ancient recordind of it working properly. the wanamaker organ is nearly as big and beautiful to hear.] one doesn't want a flagging organ on the ab calendar surely.
mrbouffant
Wise words! The biggest one I ever had the pleasure to have at my fingertips was at Liverpool (Anglican) cathedral:

special as in, having "special educational needs" lol
The Atlantic City organ is the biggest in the world, if not fully functional (it fell into disrepair sadly, and of course the restoration costs are astronomical)..

I have a CD, recorded to raise funds, which includes such amusing tracks as "Blower No.2 starting up" lol tongue.gif

If you're the blind bit interested, the website for the organ is here!

nahr, theyre just wired differently so they can play with hands and feet separately and probably with their noses as well on that monster, saves thumbing down, ha!

i knew it was being restored, let's hope they can get it back to its heyday. tell me, what does 100 [or so-many] inches wind mean.
thanks.

ps i see that they've reissued what looks like that ancient mercury living presence recording. have you heard the 'boardwalk pipes' the kimball organ?
mrbouffant
100 inches of wind is the amount of pressure used to play a particular set of pipes. Wind pressures are measured in inches of water, 100 in. pressure meaning that the wind is capable of supporting a column of water 8 feet 4 inches high!

The more pressure, the louder the pipe, basically.

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral has some stops on 50 inches of wind which are ear-splittingly loud and probably the loudest stops in the world, certainly in the UK. You can imagine what 100 inches might be like if they ever restore that part of the organ in Atlantic City smile.gif
Kai-Lei
That is a magnificent instrument and I see that a CD can be bought. Is it any good?

The CD is demonstrative of the current state of the organ. It's out of tune.. only bits of it work.. but as an historic record and a way of raising funds, it's worth it (USD15 I think...)

a double belled euphonium - theres one in the museum at the army school of music at knellar hall.
