Full Version: Difficult Pieces On Flute?

Personally, I find Chaminade's Concertino Opus 107 in D major quite difficult because all the quick phrases and such. I've also heard that the FinalMvt. 4 from Widor's Suite is hard as well.

Don't know either of those. At the moment I find the last movement of Prokofiev's Sonata in D really hard, but it doesn't crop up until FRSM so that'll be why! There was one study (no 74 in 76 Graded Studies for Flute) which I used to find really hard because there are seven flats in the key signature, but I perservered and got 28 for it in grade 8 so I dare say I'll be able to play the Prokofiev eventually!

Another piece I found really hard was the last movement of Bach's sonata in B minor. It used to be on grade eight but I dropped it and did the Mozart instead, and that Sonata doesn't crop up 'til FRSM again either. The thing with that was that the speed given on the music copy is incredibly fast, whereas when I heard a recording of it the speed was nothing like the metronome marking so that makes it more reasonable!

There's loads of other stuff, I'll probably post again after I go home and do some practice!

The Chaminade is quite a challenging piece but is lovely to play once you have mastered it. I also like Reinecke Sonata "Undine" which is a beautiful piece of music. smile.gif

Didn't I read elsewhere on this forum that you are doing a diploma? If so will you be doing the Chaminade?

Well, no, that was for piano, but if I decide to do Dip for flute, I probably will play Chaminade and Mozart G Major Concerto

Really? I will probably do the Mozart G major concerto for DipABRSM because I'm sick to death of the D major one which I've played for anything important since my mock A-levels! Then I'll probably go back to the D major one for LRSM as I like the last movement better. I'm also planning on playing some combination of Handel Sonata in C, Matthias' Sonatina, and Faure's Fantasie.

The hardest pieces I've played on the flute are the Dutilleux Sonatine, 'Le Merle Noir' by Messiaen and 'Voice' by Takemitsu (which i can't play sad.gif ).

Rushed to my copy of '76 Graded Studies' to see which one you were talking about, only to discover that my books ends at no. 54! I didn't realise there were two books...

It's really strange (and comforting I guess tongue.gif ) to hear 'Grade 8' peeps talking about how challenging they find certain pieces - when you're 'only' at Grade 3 you think that Grade 8 players must be able to play everything!

wow i feel a bit in awe of u lot hehe although i am studying grade 7 & 8 music. im not takin exams though on flute because im concentrating on my recorder grades and diploma.
i like the poulenc sonata, especially the first movement and am finding it a challenge but u lot probly think thats easy ! sad.gif I like Bach and Handel but have recently moved onto more modern styles and hav looked at some jazz which is cool.
I'm sure there are some really impressive (ie extremely difficult!) pieces out there but rather you than me!

Hey, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks Polenc 'challeging', although I'm starting to make it work, the dinamics help loads to give it more shape.

It's funny though, I always find the Baroque pieces on the lists so much easier to get to grips with, perhaps because they tend to have regular note patterns and similar (long familiar!!) rhythms. What does everyone else think?
