I live in the US, and I am considering auditioning for my regional chorus. Personally, I think that it is definitely worth the time and opportunity, so I can expand my experience with singing in an ensemble. In addition, I already sing in my school's Select Choir, and so my director has a MENC membership, which is necessary to enter.

However, rehearsals for the regional choir are on Saturdays, and conflict with one of my ballet classes. I can move ballet to another day for the six weeks, but the time is inconvenient for my parents and might not even work out for me. I really don't want to audition and not be able to attend rehearsals, since I know I would be letting everybody else down. But, this is the last year I can audition for the Intermediate Chorus. Next year, I have to audition for the HS Chorus. Should I just wait a year, or should I audition and try to work it out?

Well, you have to decide what is more important to you, the ballet or the singing. Personally I'd go for it! It sounds like a fun opportunity. You've basically listed all the pros and I think they outway the arguments against auditioning.
I obviously can't make a decision for you, though!
Best of luck! smile.gif

I managed a solution for my ballet class conflict, but now my greatest dilemma is which part I should audition for.

Last year, I always sang 1st soprano, but for the first month or so of this year, I have been singing 2nd soprano. My range is pretty far, so I could sing mostly any part in an SSA choir.

My voice is rather stiff and mellow-sounding when I sing low notes, so I don't plan on auditioning for alto. I am most comfortable with 2nd soprano, but I find it more difficult to hold my part when I sing 2nd than if I sang anything else. Finally, my voice changes into a more squeaky sounding noise when I sing the high notes and it is usually not as loud.

Should I risk it and audition for 1st soprano, or keep it safe with 2nd soprano?

Sounds like second soprano is your natural range, and you'll find that practice will improve your ability to hold a part no end (and that is also a huge asset, to be able to do that comfortably and confidently) so that would be my suggestion smile.gif

Hi Pianomistress92

I'd agree with Sarah - go for Second Soprano, if that's where you're most comfortable. It's the most in-demand female voice anyway smile.gif

Good luck
