I just wondered if everyone liked the violin because everyone i talk to does! i think it's a bit unfair on the other strings! smile.gif
carys
I prefer the lower 'voices' of the viola and cello personally. I find the violin too high.
carys
Hi!

I love playing the viola. I've been playing it for about 4 years.

Years ago, in school, I used to play the violin in the school orchestra and when the parts 'split' I always preferred the lower part. I always prefered playing on the G string and D string, and hated the E string!

So in later years I realised that I should be playing the viola, so I switched. I love having a C string! tongue.gif
saxlover
i like the violin when played well. but i do like the cello!!

Nat
hgirl
I like them all.........as long as they're played well- no scratching! tongue.gif
If I had to pick one, maybe cello
Lisa B
I have to say that strings aren't my favourite instruments but I do love to hear a cello. There's something very special about them (when played well of course!) smile.gif
violingirl
i play the violin. but i think it would be lovely to learn the viola! you'd have to get used to the alto clef. grade 5 theory comes in handy! the cello is really rich in sound. smile.gif
i wonder what the double bass would be like? having to cope with such a big instrument. and imagine carrying it around? and what about shifting? there are other string instruments i'm interested in, guitar, harp? i'd like to try some baroque stringed instruments. the bows are different and the instruments use gut strings! wink.gif
Teabag
Hi...

bassmaster
I have to say that i really love the double bass (when it's played well: i started at christmas and am taking G5 in summer - so i'm not that brilliant yet) it's got such a rich and full sound, as well as the comedy value!
amati
I do like the violin, but I also love the haunting sounds that can be produced on a cello. smile.gif
LavaLampMaster
being a bass instrument lover, I'd of course say double bass.
Yogesh
Viola da gamba, lute
joychoi
I never try string instrument but I like violin due to its' look. tongue.gif
cecilia
I like the sound of the bass viol because it's as deep as a cello but with frets so that every note rings like an open string. smile.gif
Helen
Cello, so beautiful rolleyes.gif
jasbeth
who likes harps?
DavidMusic
I love harps. And pianos, if they're a stringed instrument
Saedi1
I also enjoy the bass sounf of cello but I have reacently become very aware of how good a violin can sound....I play classical guitar so that must be my favourite biggrin.gif I really enjoy listening to classical guitar and orchestra
jasbeth
are harps considered a ''real string instrument''?
amati
Hi jasbeth I like harps smile.gif
saxlover
me too im going to buy one some day! tongue.gif
jasbeth
harps are very expensive
hgirl
lots of people like double basses! that's really cool! i've never really thought about them and im surprised that they're lots of people's favourite string instruments. The poor double basses usually get overlooked!

jazz_dudette
Although I too love the harp and even used to want one very much, I think my next instrument may well be a violin. I like it quite a lot and it is very beautiful and versitile.
Atari
I love the 'cello. I think the violin is too high, and the viola doesn't come across strongly as a soloist instrument.
recorderzrule

Ah..

Am I wrong in thinking that Guitar is a string instrument?

And is harpsichord really a string instrument? I thought it eluded definition.
liebe_klavier
i think cello is the best...
recorderzrule
thanx davidmusic well corrected the guitar is ace, especially electric tongue.gif
Trisha
I play violin but despite that i still prefer cello. Maybe when I get a bit older and have some money I'll buy myself a cello! rolleyes.gif
Jade
Violin is the best string instrument, closely followed by the cello- i love the sound of the cello tongue.gif
isabelsmells
I'm a viola fan, nothing can beat the viola in my opinion. It sounds just right to me, cause I can't stand the E string on the violin, I have to play on it a lot for one of my grade 4 pieces and I always just feel like my ear drums are about to burst, but when I play the viola its never too high and never too low.

I hate playing on the E string on the violin, but it sounds alright when professional musicians are playing and when you use vibrato.

surely harp is the best stringed instrument?
liebe_klavier
i think harp is actually classified as a string instrument...
jaime
hiya!

well my all time favourite srtring instrument is the cello. i really like to hear the deep yet still audibly pleasing sound. i think most people can listen to the cello in sucj things as elgars cello concerto (absolutley amazing, especially myleene klass' version biggrin.gif ) but i think that the violin is an aquired sound. if you really wanto to listen to violins with attitude listen to Moulin Rouges Roxanne!!! if you dont like classical violin this is the thing for you!!!! (looks for track on net for you to listen to.............) sorry cant find one!!! but seriously listen to that song it is amazing!

jaime

electric guitar by miles
liebe_klavier

You need more clefs to play 'cello: bass, tenor, treble (real tenor, that is, C on the fourh line up) and treble down an octave sad.gif

I started 'cello about the same time as my (then) 4-year-old son, and got into playing the double bass rather by accident. I already owned an estate car, for transporting a young family and all their paraphernalia, and nowadays its successor has moving the bass as its main task. The great merit of the bass is that no amateur orchestra has enough of them, so you are welcomed into their ensembles by players of much higher technical standards. There are lots of good cellists in amateur circles in much of SE England, so you have to be pretty good to play it in an amateur orchestra.

The 'cello, which I play pretty rarely and not very well now, has the advantage of a marvellous repertoire of string duos, and string and piano trios, quartets and quintets. The bass has to be content with the rather sparser repertoire of mixed chamber music, like the Beethoven Septet, the Schubert Octet (there are other good works for this combination; I particularly like the one by Howard Ferguson), the Spohr Nonet and Octet (I prefer the latter), the Dvorak Wind Serenade, and (best of all) Mozart's Gran Partita in Bb for 13 instruments (you have to insist that he wanted double bass, not contra-bassoon, by showing the pizzicati in the part).

surely harp is the best stringed instrument?

Chacun à son goût.

Advantages

Polytonal
Glissandi
Some excellent solo and chamber music

Disadvantages

Need to tune frequently (even between pieces)
Stuck in equal temperament (because of the nature of the pedal mechanism)
Lack of penetration in the orchestra requires sympathetic orchestration and balance

i think i said cello somewhere in this topic but i cant remember!

but i just loooooooooooove the harp!really love it! biggrin.gif

I play the double bass and i love it! It's very hard carrying it around but its worth it!! :-D The shifting ok to. But hard to go back up :-D I definatly think the double bass is the best string instrument and the 'cello
