I can't stand the E string on the violin, I have to play on it a lot for one of my grade 4 pieces and I always just feel like my ear drums are about to burst

I hate playing on the E string on the violin, but it sounds alright when professional musicians are playing and when you use vibrato.

Many professional violinists get impaired hearing in their left ears, either tinnitus or deafness. One of my amateur, violin-playing friends had to give up music for a period when his left ear started hearing a different pitch from his right. Now his left ear has gone totally deaf and he is playing again.

It might be a good idea for upper string players to use an ear plug in their left ear when playing. Then, again, there are still not enough viola players, so if you play that too you will be get more opportunities in orchestras and chamber music.

Agree with you, Craig.

Currently, I'm learning violin. It is such a wonderful instrument. I always mesmerise by the sound of the violin produces by my teacher. So sweet.......

Give it a try!! Playing string instruments after playing the piano isn't too hard (you won't waste time learning the bass clef)! biggrin.gif 4 years ago I started learning and now I can play at grade 8 level! biggrin.gif smile.gif
liebe_klavier
i know i should try....i had tried the violin before....but i just couldn't play it...i cou;dn't even play a staccato...hopeless....
Rainbow
Liebe_klavier, you're not hopeless. The violin is such a hard instrument (I should know, I play violin and viola!). Anyway, you already play piano and organ. I'd quite like to try organ but I think that I should try to get better at the piano first.
liebe_klavier
the organ is absolutely fab...i think it's great for you to start with organ first
czaire
Hi liebe_klavier,

You're not hopeless. Indeed, violin is consider one of the most difficult instrument. I started playing the violin for 8mths, I also can't play staccato. I'm working on the intonality.
cheeble
violin is indeed considered very difficult... i personally find the viola harder... but that's just my opinion...
i like piano
i like piano most, and then my second choice is violin. tongue.gif

biggrin.gif hey.....
i guess all string instruments are great i love to listen to the violin if its well played but i love to play the guitar....
in the end whats an orchestra without string instruments
cecilia
I love the sitar! They don't just have to be western orchestral instruments, right?
violoncellist
The cello is by far the best!

But then again, I am quite biased seeing as though I've been playing it for 13 years! The cello tends to sound better than the violin when played by a begginer as well - less painful! I just prefer the cello as it is more versatile.

The one downside is that it's a PAIN to transport though!

Cello's rule!!! Teehee biggrin.gif

P.S

when did Myleen Class play the Elgar cello concerto?????? Who put that!? I thought she was a pianist? dry.gif
frenchyhorn
im not really a string fan but if i had to choose bass or paino

strings are to high, get the best parts in orchrestras, there very popluar (hardly anyone wants to play the lower insterments like basson or tuba) and they can be very scratchy and painful! mad.gif

I like the cello but if I had to pick a fav it would have to be the violin. Has anyone heard Yehudi Menuhin ?

wub.gif Sigh...............Violin rulz among all string instruments.
Rupayan
Hi Cecilia,
Do you like the sitar that much? I'm an Indian and the sitar is an Indian instrument so I've heard a lot of it.

Have you heard the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar? He's a virtouso at the sitar. His daughter Nora Jones is a popular singer.

You must hear him play. He's God at all those ragas. smile.gif
Rosemary
I've heard another of his daughters, Anoushka Shankar play - it was wonderfully mesmerising!
Rupayan
Hi Rosemary,
Yes Anoushka is following her father's footsteps. I haven't heard her but critics say she's really promising.

The violin is good...if played well! I was playing sax and singing in my rock band in a concert and there was a violinist and he was really bad!!! I mean the thing sounded like it was being killed and it was well flat!! My fav. is the electric guitar!!
Brian May is sooo gr8!!!!!

surely harp is the best stringed instrument?

Chacun à son goût.

Advantages

Polytonal
Glissandi
Some excellent solo and chamber music

Disadvantages

Need to tune frequently (even between pieces)
Stuck in equal temperament (because of the nature of the pedal mechanism)
Lack of penetration in the orchestra requires sympathetic orchestration and balance

I would like viola but it blends in too easily.

Violin has a piercing sound.

I love the cello.

I tried to play it but every time I stuck it under my chin this darned spike kept sticking in my neck. Plain bad design if you ask me.

lol!!!!!!!!!!

my friend's 6ft 2, and whenever he has to tune small cellos at music centre he sticks them under his chin!!! it's rather amusing... only works with like 8th sizes though...
