This was on my quiz today (I live in the US, but we are studying Europe, so we had a map quiz), but I just want to check.
Is Ireland a part of United Kingdom? From my knowledge, it isn't - I believe UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland?

"Don't think so" as in Ireland is not a part of UK or that UK does not consist of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland?

Sorry, didn't explain myself properly.
I don't think Ireland is part of the UK!

This is often confusing even here. Others will correct me if I'm wrong or explain more fully.
The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and so as you say, includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The geographical island of Ireland contains the Republic of Ireland (known as Ireland) and Northern Ireland.
Hope this helps.

I know for sure that it doesn't. Ireland is an independent republic.

But I think the UK still has several small colonies dispersed all over the world, hasn't it ?

Yes, several tiny islands around the pacific and the carribean. The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK. I think that they got there independence and were allowed to have their own goverment after the first world war. I'm just guessing because I can't remember exactly.

Great Britain being basically the mainland then?
Where does the Isle of Man fit? I know it's a bit different... friend used to live there... don't know quite how it works though.

The Isle of Man belongs to the Queen so it is part of the UK.

As far as I recall, the Isle of Man is a British Protectorate.

Despite Northern Ireland being part of the UK if you permanently bring a car over here you have to apply to "export" it from the "mainland" & then re-register it over here. You have to reapply for a driving licence - the one issued by Swansea won't do. If you have children & are getting child benefit when you move over here, the child benefit is stopped & you have to reapply for it. And if you buy a computer & the warranty states that if it breaks down in the 1st year they'll send an engineer out, forget it. You have to pack it up & send it back to them at your own expense
The list goes on....

I think it means that the Isle of Man is controlled by Britain, but they have a separate government sort of thing.

It means they recognise our queen as their head of state, follow British law, are protected by the British army and agree to follow British parliamentary foreign policy decisions but are otherwise self-governing.
