Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me here:
My mum teaches at a secondary school and is doing a harvest festival assembly with year 7 (11/12 year olds) quite soon. She's just asked me to look up ideas on the internet but I can't really find any. Does anyone have any ideas for a suitable assembly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is quite important for her,

An assembly can mean many different things: is this a religious assembly (and, if so, a Christian assembly or multi-faith) or a secular affair. How long? Are the pupils going to bring gifts along to be distributed elsewhere or are they just thinking about Harvest?
If you don't mind a Christian slant (though it could easily be changed to "helping others") the Christian Aid website has specific materials under their worship section for Harvest, including ideas for assemblies. I have a leaflet called "Meet an expert" which specifically gives ideas for an assembly for those aged 11-14.
Try here for an on-line copy:
http://www.christian-aid.org.uk/learn/scho...semblyideas.pdfI used some of their material for a church-based address for Harvest last Sunday but the material could easily have been adapted to take a more "secular" approach.
Hope this helps a bit.

Erm.. dancing, lucky dips, asking the kids to bring the best flower or fruit or veggie they have planted and giving prizes for that. And making a stew from the veggies they bring or something like that.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for that, these ideas are good. The assembly is about 40 minutes long and can be religious or secular. The pupils are bringing food and toiletries for the homeless and elderly in our area and a speaker is coming to represent them but that won't fill the whole assembly. The Christian Aid website is good!
Thanks again,
Emma

Failing that you could go very traditional and see if you can find large baskets of grains, corn etc and explaing the significance of harvest. We used to make corn dolls but the tradition seem to have died........

Hi Emma - if you are looking on the web there are two excellent assemblies sites, one is and SPCK one (I think www.assemblies.org.uk) and the other is a Culham College one. I'll try and find the addresses for you. Both have junior and secondary school assemblies. If you are still stuck, pm me and let me know. Have done a few harvests in my time!

We've been doing that at school-we all hard to bring big boxes and decorate it and fill it with food and it's all gonna be sent off to homeless centres.
