Piano is percussion, technically, based on the action of the player, not the contents of the instrument. You're hitting things, just like a xylophone, but with a different tool.

For me, the 4 regular string instruments in descending order of greatness would be:
violin
cello
double bass
viola

I totally agree. But although the piano is a percussion instrument, it is one of the greatest instrument. I think the piano has the greatest number solo repertoire and it has the greatest number of concertoes written for it. It seems that on the average for every 1 violin concerto a composer composes, he would have composed about 5 piano concertoes. That said, i still prefer the violin over the piano.
