Having thoroughly enjoyed reading His Dark Materials...Pullman and a couple of Michael Morpurgo,( he has renewed my interest in King Arthur )that are nice easy reads for a stressed out mind, whilst sitting in the car doing the school run,I have run out of ideas as to what to read next.

So has anybody read Shadowmancer?

Yes - really enjoyed it. Also try Garth Nix - Abhorsen, Lirael & Sabriel - really good reads.

I've read Shadowmancer - I didn't like it. sad.gif I like fantasy books but I found it just a bit too fantastical.

Strangely enough for me (I'll read practically everything) I couldn't get into this book. The author is a vicar from my town and so tours schools talking about his books and what he considers to be the evils of Harry Potter. Apparently, he got ejected from a school in Cornwall for using bad language unsure.gif

Anyone read the C S Lewis science fiction novels? Quite hard going in places, but good, and third one (that hideous strength) I just couldn't put down!

Yes the author of this book is the same guy who is the subject of the rude language thread.

Well! I have just begun to read through the author's website.

I have noticed over the years that many men and women of Religion are often highly educated.

It appears Mr Taylor likes to play with words. For instance, with the titles of his books. His third novel entitled " Tersias" is definitely a reference to " Tiresias".

Another thing I have noticed recently is that modern children's authors are adding hidden meanings which will be recognised by the older reader ie parents for a start....and will be missed by the more younger,so naive, reader.

Mr Taylor must be present at "The Quills" this evening smile.gif

His parish is Whitby. That's where Dracula landed!!!!! getting to like this guy more and more....especially as he has worked in the music industry and been a "Christian Copper" too. Guess where that reference is from?

I read Keeper recently, and can thoroughly recommend it. Even if you're not interested in football it's still brilliant.

Also Boy Kills Man is great too.

They were both on Nils' reading list from school, and even though I'm an adult they still kept me riveted from start to finish.

Kids books often are better written - the authors know that they really have to keep the interest up - whereas we adults will put up with reading through much more dross to get to the good bits! smile.gif
