That's right - it adds on half. So the value of the dot changes, depending on what it follows.
I sometimes use other things when I'm teaching dots - for example, sausages, pound coins, hours.
So a dotted sausage = one and a half sausages.
$5 plus a dot = $7.50
A dotted pound coin is £1.50.
A dotted hour is one hour 30 minutes. etc etc.

I find that most people can count in cakes....
