Is anyone else using this book ? I am stuck on page 13 , the rhythmic clapping exercises - just cannot master the triplets / duplets. Have tried using a metronome but makes me even more confused.

Sorry - I can't find my copy. Is it triplets in one hand with duplets at the same time in the other hand? If so, there's a thread on this somewhere try this It has a couple of ideas. And this. Another one! Hope this helps.

Paul Harris's books concentrate on rhythm; mastering the rhythmic exercises is very difficult but well worth while if you can do this.

Take page 13, ex 1:
- I assume you understand that 2\2 time is 2 minims per bar. I assume you understand that the triplet crotchets in bar 1 take the time of a minim.
- set the metronome to a comfortable speed, say minim = 60.
- the top line equates to the right hand; the bottom line to the lh.
- practise tapping the rh rhythm to the metronome, with your rh.
- practise claping the lh rhythm to the metronome, with your lh.
- try fitting your hands together. The spacing on the score is helpful in deciding what comes with what.

ex 2; the metronome ticks to each crotchet beat.

ex 3; the metronome ticks to each dotted crotchet beat.

All this is horribly difficult to describe in print. I know what I am talking about but am not sure that I have made myself clear. Sorry if you are as baffled now as you were before. Ask, and I will try to provide clarification.

Thanks for your help Steve. I am still struggling but hoping I will have a Eureka ! moment one day soon. You must be a great teacher as you always seem to help people out with their problems on here. I just create problems when there aren't any. I also iron creases INTO shirts but that's another story .....!
