Hello. I'm a grade 8 pianist and grade 6 trumpeter, who has recently graduated form a course in Creative Music Technology.

I'm interested in giving piano or trumpet teaching a go, but I'm not sure how to get into it.

I was thinking it might be easier to start off teaching at a music school rather than going free-lance.

Do I need teacher training?

Will music schools expect me to have teaching experience?

to teach in a school you will need training/qualifications, graded exams aren't sufficient. with the right training some schools will take you on without experience (after all if they didn't, you'd never get any experience to begin with)

there's nothing stopping you from teaching freelance, though it might help to read these threads, sit in on an experienced music teacher's lessons, to make sure you're prepared for the job.

i think schools usually want a BMus or the like - but can't say for sure

Try the CTABRSM course if it isn't too expensive. Alternatively, find a really good teacher to carry on your studies with to take a diploma, and read some books on how to teach and set up a business.

There is a very good book. 'How to teach piano successfully' by Bastion. Suzuki have a range of very good books on teaching also.

The Alfred tutor books have with a 'free teacher's guide' available, with every lesson explained. I would recommend this series for any new teacher of piano, purely because you can ask for the free teacher guide. Obtainable from your friendly corner music shop.

The Associated Board do some excellent day seminars.
