The lines are now open for Category 12.1: Best Recording, and Category 12.2: Best Composition. PM
CAR EXPERT for Best Recording and
VIOLIN-ANN for Best Composition. You can PM us, with up to 5 recordings/compositions, ranked.
The PM voting will close at 9:30pm next week (23rd Oct), which is when I will publish the final two polls for these awards.
For the recordings/compositions: visit this website:

Better forewarned!!
Have people consented to their compositions being used in this competition? I am glad I cannot record in Mp3. I would be very unhappy to upload a composition to this site for audition only then find it in a competition two months later. I had wondered.
If any others feel restricted over what they can post here because of these competitions, you are not alone!

It is only a bit of fun....it isn't serious.
And nobody has objected to it so far.
Does it really matter

I think that for the best recording, Andante_in_C should be nominated

Her Debussy was amazing!

All recordings submitted to the site fall into the public domain; that was made clear from the moment the ABRSM yahoo group, subsequently the recordings web site, was opened.

Once a recording is on the site, I cannot stop people downloading it and using it as they wish; I can remove recordings from the site on request, though.

Philharmonia, the competition isn't where we rank all the compositions according to how good we think they are. Through nominating, we simply establish a shortlist of 5, before voting decides the eventual winner. This is upbuilding for all those in the top 5 while everyone else can be happy in the knowledge that they were actually in 6th place.

ps. my consent is of course given.

I think if we start allowing self-voting, the result will be not be fair as some people will vote for themselves while others would consider that inappropriate. I would suggest that no self-voting is allowed.

How about this:
You can vote for yourself as long as you vote for someone else as well.

Car ExpertWell some people would have no shame at putting themselves at the top of their own list, thus giving themselves 5 points while someone else might have more modesty and so they wouldn't. If everyone voted for themselves, that would also be completely pointless (as the Eurovision song contest would be if everyone could vote for themselves). I say it will be much simpler and more accurate if no-one is allowed to self-vote.

We can't actually stop anyone voting for themselves once the poll is up. We can, however, say that you aren't allowed to nominate yourself.
If your piece is good enough, someone else will nominate you.

True!
You can also say that people nominating themselves will not have those votes counted... making it a waste of time to vote for yourself (because you would just waste one of your nomination places)

OK, I will agree with Boo Radley and say you can't vote for yourself!
Is everyone clear about who to PM for each category?

and do different movements of the same comp by the same person count as separate things or a whole thing?
Car Expert
Oct 17 2005, 04:19 PM
Erm...separate would probably be best because it depends if you might like one but not the other.

I've just done the PM for best recording - that one I didn't find too hard. Now for compositions...

Do wait & listen to my new recording (you may still not think mine's the best but at least you'll know what it's supposed to sound like

I've got a problem - I'm trying to play some of the compositions so I can hear them but they keep stopping and I keep getting messages saying 'network stalled, rebuffering stream'. What does that mean? (By the way, I'm opening them using iTunes onto my computer with a right click rather than left clicking.)
sarah-flute
Oct 17 2005, 07:08 PM

If it's any help, I right click and "save target as" to my desktop, and I have had no problems...
violin-ann
Oct 17 2005, 07:08 PM
Save them on your computer instead of just 'opening' them to hear them properly. Songs you hear over the net play at the speed your modem downloads them, - which is fast sometimes and slow sometimes!
sarah-flute
Oct 17 2005, 07:15 PM
& I think also if they're not saved on your computer it probably takes a lot of bandwidth? if that is what you are doing (don't really understand itunes!)
chocolatedog
Oct 17 2005, 07:32 PM
But opening them with iTunes automatically saves them I think - as I can play them later from the iTunes index if I want to. Maybe it's something to do with iTunes - it's still not letting me play Sarah's Afternoon in Guadeloupe!!!

YAP is putting up a better version later anyway. Maybe that one isn't there anymore...
If all else fails, try saving them to your computer and opening them from there, it might work better.

Hopefully this evening..... but I don't know.

Also mentioned on Yahoo Group thread:
You can only choose compositions/recordings if YAP mentioned they were on the website before post #2033. No others will be counted, unless you want to polish up an original.
